During the month we learned Herbert W. Best died in September of 1977. An obituary will appear in this or another issue.
Courtland B. Horr wrote George Woodruff that he and his wife Marian have moved to Friendship Village, a retirement home. Their address is Apartment C 102, 350 West Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg, Ill. 60194.
Last month 20 letters were sent to classmates picked at random to help jazz up this column with news. Only three responded: Paul Miner, Dwight Sargent, and Ed Healey.
Dwight recalled when he and Harvey Hood dared each other to go down the ski jump. From the report, neither landed gracefully but with lifetime memories.
Ed Healey has been in and out of hospitals and nursing homes since mid-January. Despite such, his letter shows his same cheerful and determined spirit. He recalls his enjoyable 49 years with his wife Luke, the 16 years of football, and the 45 years with the same business concern. His address is Cardinal Nursing Home, 1121 E. LaSalle St., South Bend, Ill. 46600. He extends greetings to all in 1918.
It is pleasing to observe how Dwight Sargent functions as our president. In any matter of policy change, he first consults the executive committee, which since the last reunion is composed of all class officers.
Paul Miner phoned from Florida that he had just returned from attending memorial services for his brother-in-law, Hugh S. Whipple, who died September 7. On behalf of the Class, your secretary has sent an expression of sympathy to his wife Helene and his family. An obituary will appear in this or a later issue.
Nancy Elliott of Alumni Records, when acknowledging Ed Healey's new address, added, "Keep up your good work in securing news from classmates. That's what makes Dartmouth."
Doc Woodruff reporting in this magazine on our 60th reunion called your new secretary "Pinch Hitter for 1918." Three responses out of 20 letters makes for a pathetic batting average. But this batter is persistant, for each month 20 letters will go to a random selected group until the whole class is covered.
However, you readers don't have to wait for such prompting. Why not write now?
[As the above was going to press, word arrived that our president, Dwight S. Sargent, died on October 15.]
