The fund-raising scene now belongs to Head Agent Bud Hart and his outriders, who have been and will be exhorting you in behalf of the Alumni Fund. As you know, this year's drive is the first leg of the five-year, $160-million Campaign for Dartmouth.
Bud's acceptance of the head agent's job for still another year is service above and beyond the call of duty. It would be nice if we could reward him with a performance at least equal to last year's, which wasn't all that great for a reunion class, but was well above '41s usual result.
Meantime, though, let me register one last plea in behalf of our very own Class of 1941 treasury. No more dues notices will be going out, so you're on your own, but latecomers are warmly welcomed. Lou Young's last count showed 321 of you paid up, as compared to 360 in at the close of business last year.
As the newsletter recently reported, our intake from dues isn't covering current outlays for the ALUMNI MAGAZINE and newsletters, class notices, the Life-After-Dartmouth project, and memorial books. At the moment we're making up the deficit from interest on past savings, but that can't keep up forever. And when you send in the scratch, don't forget to season it with a dollop of news.
Word came just yesterday of the death of Walt Kuhn on March 16 after a long bout with cancer. Walt was president of Guarantee Auto Stores, Inc., a 16-store Indianapolis chain which his father (who died last year) founded in 1916. There'll be an obituary in either this or next month's issue.
Dr. Frank Munsey appears to be back in the States, judging by a note from the Alumni Records Office giving his new address as 4 Calumet Lane, Marblehead, Mass. 01945. Frank has of late been serving in the pediatric department of the L.B.J. Tropical Medicine Center, Pago Pago, American Samoa. Whether he's here on a visit, on the way back to his former practice in Rockford, Ill., or resettling in his native New England, perhaps we can report in due time.
Werner Saenger, on the other hand, has departed these shores. He has been living in Elka Park, N.Y., but is now back in Switzerland. The address: Chalet Acadia, Ebnit, 3792 Saanen, Switzerland. At last report Werner was with the Geigy Chemical Co. in Berne, but I can't guarantee that's still the case.
Since we're on the change of address beat, here's the rest of this month's dispatches: DeanPaterson forges westward from California and can now be reached at Box 102, Naalehu, Hawaii 96772. John Hodel's mail now goes to General Delivery, Deer Island, Wash. 98243, which would indicate that he has finally hung up his pica rule as editor of the Beckley, W.Va., Raleigh Register. Bill Clark has left Orford and moved across the river to Elm St., Norwich, Vt. 05055. The rest of these guys haven't left town but have registered new mail addresses: BillSleepeck, Apt. 402, 1535 Park, River Forest, Ill. 60305; Lt. Col. Paul Badger, Box 146, Winnisquam, N.H. 03289; and Ed Fell, Box 412, West Hartford, Conn. 06107.
A 1941 mini-reunion of sorts occurred on page 98 of the March 13 Fortune. A delightful piece by Roy Rowan chronicled the christening of Hong Kong shipowner C. Y. Tung's new containership Oriental Researcher at La Seyne sur Mer on the French Riviera. The christener was Polly Hill, accorded the honor because "Richard Hill has helped arrange financing for many ships, including several of C. Y.'s." The christening - successful - was just the high point of a three-day bash up and down the Mediterranean coastline, and one of the cartoons illustrating Roy's article captures Polly leading the conga line at the post-ceremonies banquet. If you missed it, and have access to back copies of Fortune, look it up.
And to wind things up, here's a letter from Dusty Rodes, prexyb emeritus of the General Motors Institute, writing from Key Biscayne: "My wife Skipper and I recently became the seventh '41ers to visit Les and Linda Davis on their fabulous C S ranch near Cimarron, N.M. After a delicious ranchhand's lunch of elk stew and homemade bread, Les took us on a complete (well, not quite all of the 290,000 acres) tour of the ranch. We saw how the cattle are born, branded, fed, and bred.
"Les and Linda both look great with those ruddy ranch complexions and are anticipating '42s 40th reunion. If anyone gets a chance, be sure to visit them out there in Marlboro Country."
