After 12 years in Boston, John and NormaClark have moved to Pittsburgh, Pa. John was approached by Sandy Lenenberg, one of the 50 largest insurance producers in the country, and has decided to accept the offer to work for him. John has been heavily involved in estate planning and business planning, and it was this technical expertise Lenenberg was looking for. We wish him the best.
Reporting on what it's like to live in Pittsburg, John says he finds there is an enormous amount of civic pride. There has been much rebuilding done downtown, with great involvement and contribution by many of the socalled "old-money" families in Pittsburgh, such as the Mellons and Heinzes. The problem of pollution, which 20 years ago made Pittsburg infamous for its blackened air, has now been corrected. They found that the soft coal for heating in homes was as much to blame as industry for the smog, and the switch to gas heating has not only cleaned up the air, but makes the buildings easier to keep clean.
John indicates there is a small, but active, Dartmouth community there, and he has met up with Chuck Cohen, who is a partner in one of the largest law firms in the area.
Another mover from Boston to Pennsylvania is Dr. Robert L. Goodman. Bob has accepted the position of chairman of the department of radiation therapy at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). This is a real honor for someone so young. Bob and his family are living in Gladwyne, Pa.
We're full of great promotions this month. Josh Rich has been named a vice president of the American Stock Exchange, effective March 9, 1978. Josh was previously president and director of Shearson Mutual Funds. He commutes from his farm. White Hall Farm in Califon, N.J., and lists sports and farming as his chief hobbies. Among his many other activities, Josh has been chairman of the Lebanon Township Planning Board since 1971, and was Pop Warner Football commissioner in 1976. Josh is very excited about his new and challenging position. He advises that not only does he have the continuing task of getting new firms to list on the AMEX, but he has to work at keeping the larger and stronger firms from moving to other exchanges. Josh will also be deeply involved in finding ways of improving capital formation, and in getting the small investor to come back into the stock market again.
John says that from time to time he sees Mike Schaefer, who is manager of treasury operations at Lone Star Industries, Inc. Mike's wife Leslie is active in real estate. With Mike's hobby of coaching junior hockey, it is no surprise that his son Geoff is turning into a good hockey player. Mike, Leslie, and their two children, Petra and Geoff, are living in Ridgefield, Conn.
I also understand from Josh that Doug MacPhail was promoted to legal counsel for Motorola. With his wife Gert and two sons, Doug is living in Wheaton, Ill. Doug was previously legal counsel for FMC Corporation in Chicago.
We wrote in the October 1977 column about Congressman Paul E. Tsongas (D. Lowell, Mass.), who was elected in '74, won again in '76, and among his committees, holds a position on the House Judiciary Committee. Joining him in the political arena, Douglas Walgren has been electled a freshman U.S. Congressman for Pittsburg. When John Clark moved to Pittsburg, he did a double take on seeing Doug featured on the television set, sponsoring a public-service message for the Cardio Puimonary Respiration program. Doug is also a Democrat, and we wish him well on Capitol Hill. Two Congressmen from the Dartmouth Class of '62 - pretty good going! We have heard also that James Abramson, president of the Andover Chamber of Commerce and a member of the town's industrial and development commission, has taken out nomination papers for the three-year-term on the Board of Selectmen. If any more of you are fulfilling political aspirations, please keep us posted.
T. Kent Graham has been named district manager of Crocker Bank's 51 offices in San Diego and Orange Counties. It so happened, Kent, that I was lunching with David Brooks, senior vice president in charge of the bank's domestic branch administration, and he was telling me he had just released this good news a week or two back. Kent joined Crocker in 1977 as a vice president with various administrative responsibilities for the bank's domestic branches. He, his wife Beverly, and their three children will be moving from Palos Verdes to take up residence in the San Diego area.
Any news, moves, impending vacations and travel plans, promotions, family additions, etc., are all most welcome for inclusion in this column.
