Our Man in the White House is Brad Richardson, son of Fred Richardson and a junior at Dartmouth. Brad was selected by Tim Kraft '63, President Carter's appointment secretary, for a three-month internship starting last January, and performed so well that he's been asked to stay until September - which he will do, all within the flexible Dartmouth Plan. Fred has recovered nicely from recent surgery and a hospital stay in Hanover.
Frank Slingluff Jr., back from England, has settled in Greensboro, Vt. Warner Willcox has forsaken Coconut Grove, Fla., for Bakersville, N.C.
Dorothy and I again had the pleasant and refreshing opportunity to participate in Class Officers Weekend in Hanover, and the Class of 1943 had all of its officers in attendance - PaulYoung, Church Leonard, Bob Field, Fred Lent,Ed Lider, Eddie O'Brien - all with spouses except for a too-busy Polly Lent, whom Fred had to leave behind in Hinsdale on this trip. FrankHartmann, our president of presidents (I said it again) presided with distinction and aplomb at the Friday evening session. Is all in great shape at the College? You bet it is! Talks by four outstanding and marvelously poised and motivated seniors, plus President Kemeny's sampling of the accomplishments of 13 students, proved it to an overflow crowd of alumni leaders. One vital theme of the meeting was, of course, the Campaign for Dartmouth, mounted to secure the College's future as a literally peerless institution. May the spirit we felt in Hanover this spring pervade the hearts, souls, and generosity of all of you.
Jim Wells was recently elected president, chief Operatina officer, and a trustee of the Wm. Underwood Co., Westwood Mass. Jim had been with Underwood for 20 years and had been executive vice president. He left in 1973 to become president and chief executive officer of Colombo, Inc. Bill is a Tuck graduate and serves as class agent for the Tuck Class of 1947. Congratulations.
The photo of Bill Sweeney accompanying the news item related here shows him with his well remembered smile - and a stylish hair cut which does leave a little bit of his ear showing. Ah, what the kids have done for us in the past decade! Nevertheless, Bill has just been elected to the board of directors of The Country Bank in Massachusetts. Bill is president of Sweeney Ford Sales, Inc., in Greenfield. Bill's activities have included, among much else, presidencies of the Turners Falls Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club and the Edelweiss Ski Club.
A nod now to those in the class actively serving Dartmouth in official positions in their local communities. Among the Clubs, BobWilliams is president of the Alumni Association of the Plains, in Omaha. Job development officers include Dick Longacre in Miami; PaulParker in Minneapolis-St. Paul, and ConnieYoung in Omaha. Liaison officers include Dr. Seward Mac Donald in Albany and Bob Field in Westchester County (Bob is also a district enrollment director).
"Where Have All the Heroes Gone?" That's the theme of the 1978 Dartmouth Alumni College, August 6-17. Come to Hanover and find out. And with this as the last class column until the fall, it's a summery reminder on which to end. The next 35 years will be the best!
