Fittingly, the very first photograph to appear on the cover of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE was of Baker Library. The year was 1932 and the photographer was Richard Frame '28, whose class celebrated its 50th anniversary along with the library this June. Before the startling innovation of a cover photograph, there were a few years of sketches and before that, issue after issue, the same somber rendering of the College Seal - everything, including the type, in black and white. (Curiously, inside there were flashy four-color ads for Camels.) The idea of a cover photograph - any cover photograph - was not universally applauded. One alumnus wrote that he was "constitutionally opposed" to photographs in magazines, while another commented: "The total effect is cheap.
