MEN'S soccer coach Tom Griffith will have his work cut out for him this fall. "We have three goals," says Griffith, who was named New England coach-of- the-year in 1978. "We have to replace our defense, find a goalie, and score more goals." Griffith lost 12 seniors and nine starters from last year's team, which had a 7-5-3 record en route to its second NCAA soccer championship bid in a row. "This is going to be a very, very young team," Griffith notes. "It's very inexperienced. And the whole defense is gone."
Griffith lost all five fullbacks, the four starters and top substitute, including first- team all-Ivy pick Tom Ryan. "We'll be looking at several sources for replacements: varsity players who saw little or no action, incoming freshmen, last season's junior varsity, and the midfield," Griffith explains. Paul Mott, the team's captain and a first-team all-Ivy selection at midfield, may be moved to fullback to put some experience there. "Paul is an excellent soccer player," Griffith points out. "But I don't know where he will play yet — at midfield or back. We're just going to have to change people around."
Four candidates are vying to succeed goalie Lyman Missimer, an all-Ivy and all- New England selection. While Griffith is looking for someone to keep the ball out of the Dartmouth goal, he's also looking for someone to put the ball in the opponent's goal. The Green scored 19 goals in its first eight games of 1978 but kicked in only three in the last seven games.
