News of classmates retiring continues to be received. This past summer, Frances Soule retired as medical director of Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. Bud will continue in part-time practice there for faculty members and their families and will continue his association with the academy's Isham Infirmary. We understand that during Bud's nine-year stint as director that his wife Bettie contributed greatly to the Phillips community as a hostess. Wendell Harding advised that he retired in July 1978 after spending all his working years in education — principally in junior colleges. Butch was dean of Vermont College of Norwich University from 1949 to 1975, and from 1975 to 1978 was a guidance counselor at Spaulding High School in Barre, Vt. He spent part of last winter in the Orlando, Fla., area and may go to the Englewood area this upcoming winter. RobertEaton retired this past summer as dean of students and registrar of Nichols College in Dudley, Mass. Bob's association with Nichols closely parallels the history of the college over a span of some 43 years. Immediately upon graduation he joined Nichols College as an instructor in economics. During World War II, the college closed down and Bob went to work for the American Optical Company. When Nichols reopened, he returned as a part-time instructor and, in 1961, was named to the position he held until he retired.
Have you noticed that beautiful gal on the Rave (home permanent), Mercene (placque), and Dentrol television commercials? Well she is none other than Ricki Minte, the charming wife of Pep Minte. And Ann Sicher, widow of the late William Sicher, has remarried. She is now married to Richard E. Weinrich of New York City. Also, John Creigh, son of the late John D.Creigh, was married in August to Nancy Geyer in Breckenridge, Calif., where the couple will live until the completion of their boat. Then they plan to spend several years sailing in the South Pacific.
Earlier this year, a poll was conducted in Manchester, N.H., as to which local attorneys would be considered among the most influential people in Manchester. One of the four attorneys mentioned most frequently was Joe Millimet. The ascendance of the Democratic party in New Hampshire is often attributed in great part to his influence.
This past summer, the Greater Gardner, Mass., Chamber of Commerce awarded its citizen-of-the-year award to Charles Brooks Jr. of Gardner. Charlie, who served more than 30 years as president of Conant Ball Company, a local furniture firm, was recently named to chair the board and serve as treasurer. The award stipulated that it was in recognition of a special individual with outstanding attributes — one who has exemplified, by deed and personal commitment, loyalty and dedication to the community. Charlie recently celebrated his 65th birthday with a big party at his home on Cape Cod. Among the 44 family members present were four from Dartmouth — Charlie, Charlie Williams '55, Calvin Brooks '77 (a great-nephew of Charlie's), and Stanton Williams '83. Among the presents Charlie received was a bright green moped. Drive it carefully, Charlie.
News from here and there: Earlier this year Bob Stokes of Tulsa, Okla., was married to Jean Wood Russell. Len Mead of Castine, Maine, has been nominated by the governor of Maine to serve a second term on the Maine Maritime Academy board of trustees. Dick Treadway of Boston has reactivated his broker's license and is back with Frank B. Hall and Company as vice president, public relations. Jim Clark of Exeter, N.H., after a rough winter physically, is now feeling fine and is planning a trip to England, France, and Greece next year. Glad to hear the good news, Jim. Clarence Mark Jr. of Evanston, Ill., has joined BKM Inc. as vice president, and, among other things, he is manager of BKM's Evanston office. John Holinquist of Wilsonville, Ore., reports he moved in 1975 from Rockford, Ill., to Oregon — just 19 miles south of Portland and a short distance from the beaches of the Pacific Ocean. John says he would rather shovel rain than snow any time! And a few months ago, Walt Mosenthal of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, received the over-35 (aren't we all?) distinguished service award from the Jaycees of his home town.
A note of sadness: It is with genuine sorrow that we report the passing of the wives of several classmates. Bill Ferguson's wife Ann expired on January 7. Evelyn, the wife of Edgar "Whit"Whitlock, passed away on July 1, and on July 29, Ed "Jake" Jacobson lost his wife Marian after 36 years of marriage. Jake met Marian almost exactly 36 years prior to the day she passed away. The deepest sympathy of the class is extended to Bill, Whit, and Jake.
