Bob Fernald and his agents have done it again! For the second consecutive year the class has set a new all-time dollar mark for Alumni Fund giving by a non-reunion class. Once more the class was aided by the generosity of Niels Nielsen. You will recall that last year, abetted by a $10,000 challenge fund set up by Niels, the class broke all records for non-reunion class giving by raising $117,900. This represented a great effort by Bob and his agents. At the 11th hour this year, with the total dollars contributed by the class then hovering around $87,000, Niels presented Bob with a new challenge. Niels told Bob that if Bob could get the class giving up to $100,000 in the few remaining days then he, Niels, would contribute 500 shares of Equity Oil stock worth $30,000. In a prodigious effort Bob met the challenge and set a new class record by raising $136,538. We salute Bob and his agents, and proffer many thanks to Niels.
Don't forget the mini class reunion scheduled for the weekend of October 17-19 at Bonnie Oaks, Fairlee, Vt. 05045. If you haven't done so, make a reservation immediately. All classmates and spouses (and children) are welcome to tailgate and lunch at the Phil Mcln- nis residence prior to the Harvard game and, after the game, to attend a cocktail party at the home of Tanna and Bob Femald in Etna, followed by a class dinner at Bonnie Oaks.
The annual lobster feed put on by Laura and Tommy Thomas at their place in Maine was held on August 2. As always, they had prepared a great repast. Some 23 classmates and 22 spouses showed, together with a number of children and grandchildren. Pete Fitzherbert had done his usual good job in promoting the affair and helping with the arrangements, and I am sure that no-one came away hungry!
Allen Phipps, who served as a class agent this year after recovering from a stroke suffered the previous year, reports that Bob Howland is not well. Bob has to use a walker because he has lost his equilibrium. He has also lost the sight of one eye and is looking for a cornea transplant. Bob would appreciate hearing from his classmates, so please take a moment and drop him a line at 12 Edgewood Road, Edison, N.J. 08817.
Budd Schulberg, whose wife Betsy Anne presented him with a baby boy last November, has another hit novel entitled Everything ThatMoves. It is a parable about a labor leader whose career and death bear a resemblance to those of Jimmy Hoffa. I don't think Budd will object if you go out and buy a copy. Inciden- tally, Budd is now working on his autobiog- raphy. It is some 175,000 words long so far, which only brings him to age 18.
Betty and Boyce Price, having sold their boat, spent the summer at Dublin, N.H., and occasionally played tennis with Abby and BillNiss. Boyce and Betty took the college- sponsored trip to Greece last October and had a great time. More recently they spent several days in Hanover attending Dartmouth Horizons. Sheila and Ted Dearborn, who take a trip once a year, plan to go to Greece this fall. I am glad to report that Ted is keeping up with his piano playing. Bill Niss, not wanting to be outdone musically, is very much involved with the Portland, Me., symphony orchestra, and is on its board of trustees.
June and Mac Hill have bought a place- in Florida looking towards retirement. However, June is still working at Wellesley College and Mac remains active in the insurance game. In July, Harry Coronis for the third time went on a ten-day salmon fishing trip to Iceland and reports that his group caught 20 fish. Inciden- tally, Rose looks as gorgeous as ever!
A note of sadness: It is with genuine sorrow that I must report the passing of Warren Davis of Houston, Tex., last spring. Warren is sur- vived by his wife Natalie and his daughter Nan- cy Janet, and the deep sympathy of the class is extended to them. Belated news has been received of the death of Ren Ostrom's wife Frannie. Ren and Frannie had started going together in high school, so had been com- panions for some 50 years. It was a great loss to Ren, and this brings the sincerest sympathy of the class to him. Ren indicates he may get east this fall and take in the Dartmouth-William and Mary football game. Why not include the class get-together the following weekend in Hanover, Ren?
