It is that time of year when we welcome a new group of pea green freshmen to the wonders of the Hanover Plain. Among the over 1,000-strong we have five progeny of the class of 1946. They are Christopher Andrews, son of T. C. Andrews of Richmond, Va.; Lawrence Behnken, son of Don Behnken of Norwalk, Conn.; Clayton Cafiero, son of Gene Cafiero of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; Douglas Dressel, son of Herman Dressel of Lynnfield, Mass.; and Andrew Hoye, son of Stephen Hoye of Pawtucket, R.I. No daughters — hope they weren't scared off by last year's unfavorable and unrepresentative publicity.
Hanover produced one of the few beautiful days we have had so far this fall for the opening football game with Princeton; but unfortunately, the Big Green's efforts were not similarly blessed. As a matter of fact, they got pretty badly beaten. Although there is always the promise of improvement, I sadly predict it will be a long, hard season for the boys in green. I sat at the game with Mary Jane and FrankCole, up from Morrisville, Pa., and caught a brief glimpse of Connie and Bob Ulbrecht, up for the weekend with Beth and Jack Ulrich. All looked hale and hearty. Also had a brief chat with Joan and Robbie Smith, up from Waltham, Mass. I learned that Robbie was recently elected a vice president of the Masterworks Chorale, a 130-voice ensemble beginning its 40th season. Last year the chorale won its second award from the Association for the Performing Arts. Robbie's full-time job is as an associate professor of history at Bentley College. I also found out that Joan was about to launch a one-person art show in Chester Depot, Vt., to exhibit her skills as a portrait painter. Talented couple. Received word through Buol Hinman that down Pittsburgh way, Dale Armstrong was recently made senior commercial vice president of the United States Steel Corporation. Dale started with the company shortly after graduating from the College and has held, over the years, many sales positions around the country while working his way up to the top spot.
Down New York way, Craig Bedle, a director of Deloitte, Haskins, and Sells, has been named the accounting firm's leading professional in operation standards. In this capacity, he will advise clients and other accountants within his own international firm on measurement criteria for monitoring controllable variables of operations. Craig, his wife Dorothy, and two daughters live in Darien, Conn.
From out in the Far West comes word that Luther L. Leeger, a practicing attorney in San Diego, was recently appointed by Governor Brown as a judge on the North County Municipal Court District bench. Luther, who lives in nearby Rancho Santa Fe, is a member of the San Diego Bar Association and the State Bar of California, and has been active in civic organizations, including the board of Defenders Inc., a group that provides legal help to indigents.
