December. There are worse months. November, January, and February are all candidates if you happen to be in the northeastern part of the country. One way to pass these dreary winter days is to think of June 1980. Why June 1980? The class of 1975's fifth reunion will be then, that's why. The dates are June 13-15, 1980, and Jeff Little has quite a weekend in store for all of us.
Just to give you an idea of the activities that are planned, here is an abbreviated version of the tentative schedule. Friday, June 13: 9:30 a.m., first DOC trip to Mt. Moosilauke; 5:00 p.m., class reception; 6:30 p.m., parade of the classes; 6:45 p.m., alumni dinner. Saturday, June 14: 8:30 a.m., nine-mile road race to Etna (No, Jeff isn't kidding!); 10:15 a.m., President Kemeny address; 12:30 p.m., class picnic; 6:00 p.m., class reception; 7:00 p.m., class dinner; 10:00 p.m., class dance. Sunday, June 15: 9:00 a.m., farewell brunch. Space constraints prohibit me from including additional events, but be assured that our reunion will be most enjoyable. Many people are involved in the preparations and all classmates are encouraged to attend.
It has been quite a while since classmates have sent me news about themselves, so I'll have to rely on news clippings from the College and a few of my unimpeachable sources for information this month. This fall, Fred Newcomb was admitted to the Maine bar in a swearing-in ceremony at the Knox County courthouse. Two oaths were administered - a constitutional one and the "attorney's oath," which has been given to all lawyers admitted to the bar in Maine since 1786.
The balance of the news this month is from Rick Waddell, who, through his involvement in reunion giving, keeps in touch with many classmates. Richard Clark is in San Francisco and is employed by the Security Pacific Bank. Andy MacDowell has returned to New Canaan, Conn., after a stint in Chicago, where he was working for Tee-Pac Inc., a subsidiary of the Continental Group, by which he is now employed. Steve Alpert received a law degree, passed the Massachusetts bar, and is associated with a small law firm in Boston. Dan Kenslea joined Goldman Sachs after receiving his M.B.A. from Harvard. He is currently in training in New York City, but will be assigned to Boston by the end of the year.
Dave Dunbar recently published a book entitled A Walk Through New England. He is presently "looking for someone to finance his next book." Dave Cook is still with the First National Bank of Chicago and has moved from the leasing subsidiary to corporate finance. Grant Healey is in Hanover working for the Campaign for Dartmouth in the area of major gifts. Finally, Cate Waddell recently became a CPA. She is a senior financial analyst in economic research for the A. C. Nielsen Company.
That's it for this month. Merry Christmas to all. I'm hoping for coal in my stocking - and under the tree - and in the furnace. It's cheaper than oil or gas!
