Bill Wendell swapped two class dues bills for two from classmates on whom we'd recently reported.
Jim McElroy: "We are scheduled to move to Florida two weeks from today. We are having a miserable time trying to get rid of all kinds of stuff so we can fit into the smaller house. To complicate things, Donna's 89-year-old mother, who lives with us, fell down a flight of stairs and broke her right hip and right shoulder last Saturday at five o'clock in the morning. She, of course, is in the hospital, and it is doubtful she can get ready in time to leave with us. We feel very sorry for her. It has been a painful experience. Donna will probably have to fly back to get her when she is ready to go."
George Stevens: "I'm starting out on a new job on the first of October. I'll be District Court Commissioner for South Whidbey Island here in Washington State. My jurisdiction includes traffic and misdemeanor cases. It should be interesting, especially since I was on the committee, years ago, that drafted our District Court Act and the court's rules of procedure. It's only a part-time job, but retirement is such a busy time that that is all I have time for!"
John Cogswell sent us seven more.
Abner Dean: "In my one-man conglomerate each day is a takeover-so I'm never chairman of the bored!"
Jack Gilmore: "We truly missed seeing you and Lucy and our other friends at the Yale game weekend. We hope to join in at one or more of the gatherings next fall."
Bill Hayden: "Now have six stores and almost make a living out of it!"
Bob Oltman: "Enjoy the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. Cannot keep up with the many changes in our College any other way. Bobbie and I were in Greece for about three weeks in October. We will spend Christmas in Chicago with our daughter and her family."
George Tarr: "Keep busy! Just back from a couple of weeks in Key West. Do an answering service, in my home, for my nephew, which means I'm a little confined to the area of the telephone. But it is interesting."
Bill Walker: "Keep up the good work and a Merry Christmas to you and yours."
Luke Watson: "We hope to visit Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine again next fall and will look forward to seeing you and Lucy then. If you come south, please remember that the welcome mat is out here on your way down and/or back."
We have heard directly from:
Charlie Schneider: "Just a note to let you know that I have run across one of your old and trusted associates while curling at my club, St. Andrews. 1 am not a regular curler, but for the last four years I have been with a group that curls one afternoon a week after a pleasant lunch.
"We just started the first of November, and following my annual trip south to see my son Pete in Greenville, S.C., I began to curl last week and struck up a conversation with Harold Bigley, a fine fellow and a good addition to our weekly curling fraternity, which is mostly a social event with so-so curling excellence - lots of good fellowship and fun.
"Red Gristede was here last Thursday. We get together about once a week also. He is doing fine and soon should get rid of his cane, he hopes by the holidays! Spends a good deal of his time taking orders from his daughter Amy (not to say what he gets from Zorah). Keeps him plenty busy and mostly trouble-free."
Matty Matteson: "Am practising golf frequently waiting for my former roommate Jim Rick to show up with his golf clubs."
Jack Warwick is president of Annual Report Marketing, Inc. They offer "a package plan for advertising your [corporation's] annual report to up-scale consumer audiences." Fifteen magazines are available in three groups of noninterchangeable titles.
Jack Benson: "Most of my contact with '31ers, and other Dartmouth people for that matter, is in connection with money raising. A good baker's dozen of our classmates support Tuck Annual Giving, for which I am class agent, and their support has increased this year. The overall Tuck drive is very successfully fueled by an increasing number of non-Dartmouth grads.
"Gladys and I were in Hanover for a 'convocation' of those working on the Campaign for Dartmouth, as Bill Minehan's letter indicated. My credentials for the meeting ran outside the Class, since I have been tabbed an area chairman for Naples, Fla., and environs. There are about 40 candidates on my list for Leadership Gifts, and George Davis '28 will work with me when we both get on the spot. Meanwhile, Bernie Boyle is helping me set up meeting arrangements long distance."
