THE men's basketball team posted its. second best record since 1959-60 but lost its coach in the process. Gary Walters, who coached the Big Green to two winning seasons during his four years at Dartmouth, will follow in the footsteps of Dave Gavitt '59 and take over the coaching duties at Providence College. "We will begin a national search immediately," said Athletic Director Seaver Peters when Walters' decision was announced early in March.
Walters is the fifth coach to come and go since Doggie Julian's last year in 1966-67. His tenure of four years at Dartmouth was the longest since Julian's 17 seasons. The trademarks of Walters' teams are skill, tenacious defense, and competitiveness. The 1978-79 edition was no exception. The young team, playing without a tall center, achieved a 14-12 record that included upset victories over Holy Cross, Seton Hall, and Princeton. The team finished in a fourth- place tie in the Ivy League with a 6-8 record and ended the season as the second leading defensive team in the nation, holding opponents to 56.8 points per game. Larry Lawrence, who played center in spite of his relatively slight 6 feet 4 inches, was the high scorer in 19 of Dartmouth's 26 games and led the team in rebounds. Lawrence is a junior.
Gavitt, the man who hired Walters away from Dartmouth, is now athletic director at Providence and will coach the 1980 U.S. Olympic team.
