Every once in a while I get a small article about a classmate that has appeared in his local newspaper. A get-to-know-your- neighbor type of thing. Recently such an article sported the smiling face of Jeff Saffer, wearing what appears to be a rather showy bow tie. Jeff lives and practices family medicine in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and has done so since 1976. Since he lives just a stones throw from Hanover, I expect to see Jeff at Homecoming, October 19-20.
A second such article chronicles the achievements of Rick Detwiler, who recently received the Human Rights Award from the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. Rick is the executive director of the Indian Valley Opportunity Center in Souderton. He also serves on the local school board and on the boards of other community-based organizations. Tom Snow, president and chief executive officer of the law firm Carlton Fields, has been appointed to the executive board of the Association of Commercial Finance Attorneys. Tom concentrates his practice in the area of secured financing and commercial real-estate transactions. Some personal news for those who have been following my political career closely: I chose not to run for school board this time around, ending a four-term, 12- year stint.
Speaking of politics, Norman Jacobs has resigned his position as president of our class. Norman has several business ventures going and juggling them did not leave enough time to do the job as he wished. Before becoming president Norman was in charge of our reunions and set a standard that has been hard to match and impossible to exceed. As president he helped make the Class of 1969 Room a reality. Thank you from the class to Norman and his lovely wife, Irene.
The executive committee searched far and wide (okay, we only searched far) and persuaded Dudley Kay to assume the mantle of authority. He will be officially appointed president at our Homecoming class meeting. Dud has already shown great enthusiasm for the job and we know he will continue in the tradition of our past leaders. Finally, I must report the death of Duane Lee on February 13.
Take care.
