The news is a little sparse as I prepare this column in late September, but I will be spending two October weekends in Hanover and hope to gather a few up-to-the-minute "scoops" for future columns.
One item that we will be calling to your attention during the next few months is that quinquennial event known as reunion. The dates are still the same-June 13—15, 1983- and while it will be your 35 th you haven't misplaced a year, you have just been merged with the classes of '47 and '48. That perennial "tent meister," Bud Hughes, will once again be in charge, and he hopes that many of you are planning to join him.
A recent phone call to the American consulate in Toronto put me in touch with Consul General Fred Smith, who has been in residence there since 1979. He previously held the same position in Mexico City during 1975—76, but returned to Washington for three years before moving to Canada. Fred's wife Sharon assists in the social responsibilities required of the position while trying to keep track of the four Smith children. Allison lives in Canada and is married to a Canadian; Meredith is in her last year at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont.; Tory is a sophomore at Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.; and Adam is at the New Hampton School in New Hampshire. The senior Smiths will be returning to Washington next June for what Fred hopes will be a permanent assignment in D.C.
Since the space is available and this is my last year as secretary I will reveal that the Haaks do have a life outside Dartmouth, although you could never convince the mail carrier of that. I am enjoying my second year as president of the Dartmouth Club of Hartford, so there are days when I take on a definite green cast. Businesswise, I am still with the Travelers, and Barbara is starting her 13th year as head librarian at Miss Porter's School in Farmington. After four "fun-filled" years in Hanover, both children are pursuing graduate degrees Kellen at N.Y.U. and Amy at the University of Idaho. Our two yellow Labs are beginning to creak with age, providing mute evidence of all that is in store for their masters.
Until next time, keep in touch. Vail
