Here are a few items from the Alumni Council meeting: Dartmouth's freshman class will come from the 1,778 applicants accepted and will be 60 percent men and 40 percent women. Thayer School will have 320 students, Tuck School 140 new students, and the Medical School will have a total of 300.
Our 1916er,. Dr. George E. Paine, has assembled a most comprehensive library of books about the history of medicine. Did you know that Oliver Wendell Holmes, poet, essayist, and lecturer as well as an M.D., was professor of anatomy and physiology at the Dartmouth Medical School? George loaned your secretary a copy of a limited edition (this was copy number 32) of the Phi Beta Kappa poem written for and delivered by Holmes at the 1839 Dartmouth commencement. A few lines from this poem show how timely it was then and still is today: Yet ere we part this home if Science claims One passing tribute to her hallowed names Years roll on years in darkness and decay Youth chills to age and age disolves away.
Greetings and salutations to one and all from your class officers, wishing you the best of everything at this Thanksgiving season.
