Your secretary would like to report on the leisure activities of classmates, accomplishments of grandchildren and attractiveness of great-grandchildren, but such information has not come, and we can only comment on the weather and the reports that have come from the Alumni Records Office concerning recent deaths.
It has been rugged weather as these notes are written in late January, with below-zero readings in the Boston area and below-freezing temperatures in Florida. It is to be hoped that when this column appears in March the weather will have moderated. Now for comments.
Mat Hallet: Delayed report of April 1980 death. Born in New England but spent his business career in the mid-South in textiles.
Win Webber: Self-employed in southeastern Massachusetts. No close relatives, and his recent years spent in the V.A. Hospital in Brockton. He was perhaps our most proficient tennis player, a pastime he followed almost to the day of his death.
Vogie Stiles: Came to Dartmouth from the Midwest and returned there to engage in oil production. Later he joined the Research and Development Laboratory in Natick, Mass., as chief petroleum engineer and then spent his retirement years in Wellesley Hills.
Paul Smith: A "local boy," born in Vermont, schooled in Lebanon, where he returned after graduation for lifelong automotive activities in a concern which he headed. He divided his time between Hanover and Florida and two years ago moved south permanently.
Many classmates and widows may not realize that the Famous Class of 1914 inaugurated the Memorial Book Program, whereby a book is purchased with class funds, selected by the library, and inscribed with a special bookplate carrying the name of the deceased classmate. It is placed in a special section of the stacks and can be viewed at any time by interested persons. This program has been picked up by several classes, and through it a substantial lift is given the special book collection of the library. 1914 leads the way!
