A note from Helen Berry addressed to Spider reported that Jack Berry had had a very serious fall late in January, which, although no bones were broken, resulted in internal injuries which put him in the hospital for a spell. Helen reported that he was improving, but we're sure he would appreciate a card from his Dartmouth classmates.

Sometime ago Stu Russell reminded us that we had not published an up-to-date class directory since our 50th reunion in 1969 and that there have been many changes of address since then. Indeed there have. So, with the invaluable assistance of Nancy Elliott, director of the Alumni Records Office, Spider has arranged for a computer printout of the class roster, which will be included as a supplement to the next "Smoke Signal." You will probably have received it before you read these notes, but in any event we hope you will find it useful. If you find any errors or omissions, we suggest you notify Nancy Elliott immediately at the Alumni Records Office in the Blunt Alumni Center.

We have been hearing recent rumors that Jimand Mary Davis are thinking of moving back to New England from the sun belt, to which they fled a few years back so that they could enjoy the Florida sunshine and Jim could play golf throughout the year. We decided it was time to investigate and telephoned to find out what was up. To our surprise and delight, both Jim and Mary answered. Yes, it's true that they are "thinking," but that's about as far as it has gone. If and when it comes about, they will probably locate in or near Carlisle, Mass., where son Jim Jr. is living. All of which is good news to those of us who have missed them and hope to be able to see them again from time to time.

The big news for all of us of the Dartmouth family., of course, is the recent election of Dave McLaughlin '54 as the 14th president of the College. Since his election has been widely publicized in the public press as well as in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, it would serve no purpose to comment here on his career as an outstanding undergraduate and as a dedicated alumnus who has served the College faithfully and with distinction as a Trustee since 1971, as well as in many other capacities. It suffices to say that his election has been received with enthusiastic approval throughout the alumni body. We recall that he will be the second president in recent years to come back to Dartmouth from the business world. The first became an outstanding educator and one of the most respected and beloved of all Dartmouth's presidents. This precedent augurs well for the future of the College. We wish him well.
