In its newsletter for March, Campaign For Dartmouth gave Jud Pierson a whole column and even a new title, "Hanover Superstar." The article detailed all the work he has done for the campaign since it started in 1978. He is area chairman for leadership gifts in most of the Upper Valley. He is on the Alumni Council as class bequest and estate planning chairman, and, of course, he is our own '33 bequest chairman. I've known Jud since we were in knee pants. We "looked over" Dartmouth together as high school seniors. He's always cautioning me not to mention him in these notes, but this tribute to him in that newsletter was so praising, so well-deserved, that I've thrown his cautioning to the winds.

I phoned Mannie Sprague in California. He says 100 of us have already sent in early contributions to the '81 Alumni Fund. He has 57 assistant class agents lined up, ready to work. He hopes this year to have a greater participation from '33. He has set a target of $90,000. Among classmates he has spoken to recently are Stu Durkee, Bob Guggenheim, and JackHuntress, all well, and all expecting to come to our 50th in '83.

Also on finances, Sam Cunningham, our treasurer, is very pleased with you. Despite the increase in dues from $10 to $15 this year, we had a participation rate of 69 per cent. And bless those wives of our departed classmates who not only give so generously to the Alumni Fund but also show their desire to remain members of '33 by paying their class dues.

Last month, I reported that the honorable HENRY P. SMITH 111 had represented Dartmouth at the inauguration of President Berendson of American University in Washington, D.C. I didn't then know that Hank's wife, Helen Belding Smith, Cornell '33, represented her alma mater at that inauguration. She did. It might just be the first time the Ivy League has provided such double endorsement of such a ceremony.

A member of the class of '38 sent me an article that appeared in the Waterburt Republican (Connecticut) re: Hal Smith. With the column was a picture of Hal and "Copey" at the dedication of a painting of Hal as that painting was unveiled in the main office of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Waterbury. Hal has been chief executive officer of that institution since 1935 and has nurtured it from assets of "under $25,000 to $280 million." I asked the Republican for a glossy to show you, in these notes, how well time has dealt with the Smiths, but I got no response. To refresh memories: Copey is called "Copey" because she was Miss Copenhaven before marrying Hal, quite a few years ago.

Another banker, Horace B. Shaw Jr., has been named a director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston. Horace is a trustee and consultant of the Burlington, Vt., Savings Bank.

From hither and yon: Bill Schlesinger is still practicing in internal medicine, but is "slowing down." Dave Coolidge is retired and is leading the country club life in Pinehurst, S.C., where he can fall out of bed and land on the first tee. A class of '38 spy has seen DeHart Krans at a Tampa Bay, Fla., Dartmouth Club luncheon. He's hardy and enjoying retirement.

Jinnye (Hal) Mackey works as a volunteer in a hospital in Westchester County, N.Y. Gretrude (Nat) Root enjoys New York City opera, concerts, and three granddaughters. One of her two daughters is living in Florence, Italy.

Our pre-eminent '33 golfer, Hunter Hicks, has had some heart by-pass surgery and is, for the moment, confined to walking and obeying doctor's orders. One of our past presidents, SidStoneman, continues to work hard in Boston, but he has loaned Miriam to Florida for a while until he can join her. Our current president, Page Worthington, is back in Baltimore, hard at work, preparing his annual reports and getting ready for the exhausting Class Officers Weekend early in May. He's had a rough spring at Hilton Head Island from one rough to another.

Regarding that C. O. Weekend, I think that you can be gratified that all of your officers go back to it, even from as far as California and Florida.

Blessings to all in '33 and to David T. McLaughlin '54.
