I chatted with Tom Kelsey in early spring and discovered he was off to Big Squam Lake in New Hampshire to have a look at the house he and Liz are building there. On route to Stowe for a family ski trip, Tom was finally cashing in pn a deposit he put down on a ski package back in 1979 but it rained the entire time he was there. He was invited back with the deposit still in force. Nice going. Tom also serves as my insurance industry correspondent and confidant. He reports that Richard Krim has been named acting Federal Insurance Agency administrator in Washington, D.C. His agency supervises the insurance industry and makes certain that fire insurance is available in troubled inner-city areas as well as flood insurance in flood-prone areas.
The New York Times had a good story about how the urban appetite for western fare from the TV series Dallas to cowboy boots at discotheque's is causing a shortage of cowboy hats. The article stated that Gary Rosenthal, president of Stetson hats, and all his employees "are just breaking our backs to get out as many hats as we can." Gary tells us that he is adding a wing to his Danbury, Conn., plant and is installing new production lines in his St. Joseph factory. The company, now already working one and a half shifts, may expand to two. Gary was quoted as follows: "We are pleased by the boom. We don't think it's trendy or faddy. Western wear, particularly cowboy hats, is now part of America's dress code. It's the only truly American look. It's patriotism." Our hat's off to you, Gary!

Your class officers were on hand in Hanover for the annual weekend of workshops and meetings held early in May. Steve Mullins,Brad Borden, Dave Martin, Dick Davidoff,Dave Mandelbaum, and this scribe were pleasantly surprised to have Dave McLaughlin join them for breakfast at Hopkins Center. We have a lot of exciting projects coming up and you'll be hearing about them soon. The class officers meeting is held at the same time as Green Key weekend so there was a lot of undergraduate activity going on. It may be of interest that the Psi U's were busy on their front lawn Saturday afternoon cooking a whole suckling pig on a spit over a bed of charcoal.
Across the street at Deke Park, Greta Mesics 'B2 had received permission from the town of Hanover to have a birthday celebration with keg beer and a fancy barbecue. She was joined by lots of her friends. Joe Mesics and Mary flew up from Connecticut for the festivity and your class officers joined in the fun. Despite no house, the old Deke House property still can support a good party.
