A new assignment as vice president, operations and development, for the Far East division of Colgate Palmolive forced Walt Fogarty and family to move (with reluctance) from Paris to Darien, Conn. Walt is often on the road to ten manufacturing subsidiaries spread from Australia to Japan. During time at home, he takes the wife and three children - ages 11, seven, and four - to the family retreat on Shelter Island, N.Y. Walt's closing thoughts: "My children won't be in college until I am 60. Hope nobody aspires to be an M.D."

It's very helpful to receive word from classmates who also send news of other 'sBs. Thanks to all who do. Jack Bennett, who serves as one of our terrific class agents, writes that he is working in the corporate planning department of AT&T in Basking Ridge, N.J. Doubtless Jack has plenty to plan right now. His daughter is graduating from the College of Wooster, Ohio, this June. His son is a freshman at Keene State College in New Hampshire. In August he saw Steve Dawkins, who is presently charge d'affaires at the American Embassy in the Seychelles. Steve says he loves both the work and the climate. There has been some excitement there recently which should have added to Steve's experience.

Former sprinters, joggers, leapers, jumpers, and weight lifters, and those who still are, will be interested to know that the 1982 Soucony Dartmouth Relays drew 3,000 athletes to Hanover in January. If you are going to be in Hanover one of these Januarys, check out this event.

One old runner is now running the Bethel Park, Pa., School District. Superintendent Ted Merritt has a typical district - lengthy strikes, fiscal problems, and power structure machinations. One wonders how kids get educated. Old pros like Ted keep the thing going. Last summer the Merritts traveled to the Southeast, catching 500 pounds of bluefish on the North Carolina outer bank and stopping in Kentucky and Ohio to watch their children in swim meets. The two Merritt boys are on the Pennsylvania state championship team and hope to repeat. All four children are excellent swimmers. Ted's beloved 40-foot sailboat is moored in Stratford, Conn. They were able to get in one sailing trip this summer, going from Long Island to Block Island to Newport. Wife Linda is back in school studying nursing and health care subjects. Ted emphasizes that the latch string is always out for '58s. They live about ten miles south of Pittsburgh.

Just after returning from France, Fred Hildebrandt wrote that he and his wife Pat visited daughter Jody '84 and her Language Study Abroad family in Aries, France. Fred has a daughter graduating from U.N.H. in June and a daughter who is early-decision Dartmouth '86. He supports all this as vice president and general manager, analytical instrument division, of the Foxboro Company. Fred is also vice president of the Merrimack Valley, Mass., Alumni Club.

Happy John Long was able to purchase from his mother the family home on Long Island Sound in Branford, Conn. Built by his grandfather and remodeled and extended by John, it must have a lovely setting. My wife and I lived in Branford during law school days. It is as lovely a place in the spring as one will find. John is senior writer/producer for advertising and sales promotion operations with General Electric Company. His responsibilities include meetings, films, presentations, and speeches. He is also a freelance writer and consultant. The Longs have a daughter who has worked for Data Resources Inc. in Detroit since graduating from Kalamazoo College in 1980. Their son is considering college options this year. A dedicated writer, John even augments my form. All suggestions are welcome.

Joel Einhorn sent in a newsy, interesting note. Joel is now vice president and counsel, small business services, Control Data Corporation. He has headquarters in Greenwich, Conn., and staff in Baltimore and Minneapolis. Wife Linda works for N.Y.C. and is in charge of the South Street Seaport Restoration Project. They have a daughter in class five at the Chapin School in N.Y.C. Last spring the Einhorns visited Japan. They really enjoyed the "beautiful, friendly country." As reported earlier, Joel will work with Bill Hartley on the 25 th reunion book.

On a crip to Minnesota, Joel visited Leon Goodrich in St. Paul. Joel reports with apparent astonishment that Leon "doesn't seem to have aged a day since leaving Hanover." The Goodrich family is actively engaged in "a variety of musical, athletic, educational, and charitable activities."

An interesting business announcement caught my eye because it features two classmates. They are Kenneth Platnick and Paul Duffy. They are the principals of the Brownstone Group, which offers services as corporate writing specialists for large and small businesses. Ken pursued doctoral studies in government and economics at Columbia. He has written for the New York Times and SaturdayEvening Post. Other past positions include communications specialist with the American Stock Exchange and director of publications for R.C.A. His book The Option Game was the first written on that subject. He has also been president of a public relations and publications firm. Paul was a reporter for newspapers including the New York Times and was night editor there for two years. He has written for a number of well-known magazines and his advertising work has been recognized for excellence by the Advertising Club of New York and the Copy Club. The pair offer quality work - at a presumably appropriate price - for annual reports; brochures for marketing, fund-raising, and sales promotion; speech work; audio-visual materials; and magazines and newsletters. Good luck to the new venture.

Phil Drescher still lives in a lovely house overlooking the blue Pacific in Ventura, Calif The Dreschers' daughter is having a wonderful experience at Dartmouth, living in Wheeler and loving all of it. The Stuart Gords report that their daughter is also having a great time at Brown, proving it can be done. She worked for a U.S. Representative last summer and got the Washington bug. The Jack Strombergs also have a lovely house on a hill in California, in Mill Valley, near San Francisco. All was well the last time we heard from them. Jack is traveling no more than usual for Bechtel Corporation, where he is in the legal department. Their oldest daughter is also a very happy Dartmouth student. The Fred Pitzners noticed their children were looking forward to snow after their move from. Florida to New York. Hope they saw some!
