I hope that the year has gotten off to a good start for ail and that no one has forgotten over this long winter how good spring can be.
In the meantime, Dick Sammis and Sarah Jenkins have tied the knot. They were married on November 21, 1981, in Williamstown, Mass. "Sally" is an assistant vice pesident at Oppenheimer Properties in New York City. Dick is associated with the prestigious New York City law firm of Wilkie Farr & Gallagher. The wedding was attended by a number of Dartmouth grads, including Howard Sammis '23, Arnold Sammis '35, and a whole group of '69s - Bill Kneisel, Bill Selden, Lane McBurney, and Ken Wilson. Our classmates included Al McLean, Carl Andros, Dan Barnett, J. B. Howard, and Denis O'Neill. One of the youngest in attendance was Duncan McLean, who is the fourth and most recent delivery by the stork to Al's house.
Also in November came the announcement of the engagement of Peggy Otto to our own Michael Swistak. Peggy and Mike are to be married in Seattle in May. Peggy is from the Seattle area and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Washington, as well as the recipient of a master's degree from that school. Since his Phi Beta Kappa graduation from Dartmouth, Mike has been pursuing a medical career, having been graduated from the Tufts New England Medical Center.
On the job scene, word has come that Steve Bruemmer, who teaches at the University School of Milwaukee, last fall received an outstanding teaching award from the Independent Schools Association of the Central States. The award is a very special one.
Bill Miller returned this fall from a sixmonth Mediterranean assignment with the Navy. He is assigned to a helicopter anti-submarine squadron and was aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Thorn. Bill's detachment was involved in two N.A.T.O. exercises, one of which involved 120,000 personnel, 250 ships, and 1,000 aircraft from 14 countries. The other exercise included close-convoy escorts, mine counter-measures, and tactical air support operations. Bill's squadron's hometown is the naval air station in Norfolk, Va.
I had a great card from Lenny and Jan Banos. Lenny sent me pictures of Jessica and Stephanie, his two very cute daughters. They seem so mature for very young ages - I hope they won't mind being called "cute." Lenny has recently been promoted to operations manager for the accessories and supplies division of Compugraphic. This means he takes on the additional responsibilities of production, quality control, manufacturing engineering, inventory control, and purchasing. Best of all, he says he is still having a good time with it. Somehow there is also time for swimming, jogging, and yoga.
I also had a great card from Chris and San Buschmann in Farmington, Maine. Chris is employing his map-making skills for a company in Auburn, Maine. This fall he was working in a town in New Hampshire and seemed to be getting it all mapped out very rapidly. Their daughter Kelly, who is a wonderful child, started kindergarten this year, and son Derrick is now over two years old as San says, "that makes him a regular kid now." San herself is busy with the whole crew.
Finally, I had a fine letter from Josh Fitzhugh, bringing me up to date on his activities over the last several years. You may remember that Josh pioneered the establishment of the National Law Journal, the legal newspaper with a national scope. After the Journal was established, Josh left the paper and began doing freelance articles, including one for New York magazine on New York's new divorce law. The editor was Dick Babcock '69. Wishing to return to northern New England, Josh then took a position as counsel to the Vermont Department of Labor and Industry in Montpelier. This was a fascinating job in which Josh acted as. among other things, a hearing officer for worker's compensation cases. Josh also chaired a committee that handled requests for variances under the state's fire code. As counsel, Josh came to know a goodly percentage of the lawyers in the state. With this under his belt, He has now joined the firm of Sheehey, Bruce and Bray in Burlington, Vt. The firm does avariety of legal work with perhaps a greater emphasis on business law than many other Vermont firms. I should add that there are now two younger Fitzhughs - the most recent arrival, Eliza, having been born last November.
