"Welcome, Class of '87" proclaims the large greeting on the portal of Hopkins Center. And here they are 1,060 freshmen from 45 states and 12 countries. The class consists of approximately 450 young women and 610 young men.

Naturally, '22 is delighted to have two representatives in this freshmen class. And, since '22 always marches to a different drum, it still practices "ladies first." So, our first honors go to Chrissie Stearns '87 of Gansevoort, N.Y., granddaughter of John Sloan Dickey '29 and his wife Christina and of our departed '22 classmate, Stewart PersonsStearns and his widow, Louise Stearns. Chrissie is the daughter of Stewart P. Stearns Jr. '54 and his wife, the former Tina Dickey, a Smith alumna. As numerous critics well know, these notes occasionally report authenticated history, but always shun speculated prophecy; yet it is now confidently predicted that you will read much more about Chrissie Stearns on the Dartmouth women's tennis team.

Twenty-two's young man in the class of '87 is James Pope Saeger of Bethlehem, Pa., grandson of our Bill Pope. James is an early acceptance applicant who chose Dartmouth over substantial scholarships offered elsewhere. He is an outdoors man, as well as an honors student, so the Dartmouth Outing Club will have another enthusiastic member.

Twenty-two's undergraduate representation, however, is not limited to the class of '87. Linda Rhines of Plymouth, N.H., granddaughter of Stan and Catherine Miner and daughter of Robert Rhines '60 and his wife, the former Connie Miner, is in the class of '86. Eric D. Mountcastle of Gulf Breeze, Fla., grandson of Monty Mountcastle, is a "grand old senior" in the class of '84.

So fast does time scoot by, especially for octogenarians, that the 146 th meeting of the Dartmouth Alumni Council late last spring now seems eons ago. You have, of course, read reports on the important matters discussed during the three-day meeting, but there are still some '22 items that should not pass into unreported oblivion. First, as the faculty representative on the council, Professor Jere R. Daniell '55, son of our WarrenDaniell, gave an excellent talk on some phases of student life at modern Dartmouth. Another report of special pleasure to Twoters was that Charles F. Henderson '62 of Phoenix, Ariz., son of our Larry Henderson, had been elected to the council as a representative from the southwestern states. And it was an additional pleasure to enjoy Harry Bruckner Jr. '60 and his daughter Melissa as table companions at a council dinner. Harry, of Green Harbor, Mass., is an active alumnus and former president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Eastern Massachusetts.

These council meetings are extremely busy occasions for the members representing all sections of the country and many Dartmouth classes. A sizable number of former council members also generally attend. The days and likely as not the evenings are filled with commitee meetings and general sessions of the entire council. There are 12 committees on everything ranging from class organization and student life to communications. Each member generally serves on two committees. All of which at the end of the last session caused one member's wife to ask, "Does any other college have a group as loyal and devoted as you are to Dartmouth?"

Despite the rugged therapy Charlie Earle is undergoing, his summer, as well as that of his daughter Peggy, was cheered by the visit of his other daughter Barbara, her husband Gerald Prego, and their daughters Kimberley and Lyn, who flew over from South Wales.

Seventeen members of the Twoter clan attended the four class ('19, '20, '21, and '22) pre-game luncheon at the Hanover Inn before the 21-3 victory over Princeton. Ray Atwood will, of course, have names, ages, and weights of these Twoters in his next newsletter. Here we only say that among those we don't see as often as we'd like, it was very good to see Louise Stearns and Herm Oliver with his son Andy '50.
