The following most delightful letter, plus an accompanying picture, reproduced near this column, was received this summer from Charlie Russell: Dear Dave,

I can't remember whether or not I ever before wrote news to the class notes column, which may account for the intense procrastination in evidence. It took place in May (this year), and seemed like a glorious and amazing event. I can't figure out why it took us so long. Dave O'Neill and his wife Harriett, Paul Meyer, and I descended on the Orange, N.H., ranch of Howard and Peggy Read for a weekend of . . . It turned out to be the most. . . .

Well that's not being very descriptive, but as varied as our lives have been, it is cause to pause when we began resurrecting old common interests which brought us together when we lived on campus more than 30 years ago. The picture enclosed, with a backdrop of Cardigan Mountain and blossoming apple trees, has the four classmates making (unbelievably) ice cream with an archaic, hand operated ice cream freezer. Put it all together and it spells CHUBBERS and that's the truth!

The (unplanned) enterprise of the weekend was Reader's telling of the Doc Benton story. Chains were operated by yours truly, and I forget who did all the screaming. Oh, it was nostalgia time in Old Orange that night. Howie will spend the month of October putting all the shingles back on his house.

Regards, Charlie

Ed Clark '52, my old friend and the associate editor with me in putting out the 1951 Aegis, as well as the Libertarian Party candidate for president of the United States in 1980, writes as follows: Dear Dave,

I read your class notes about Frank Small wood's book, The Other Candidates. I am not sure that you are showing proper respect to the class of '52 failing to mention that one of its members was the Libertarian Party candidate in 1980. In case you want to broaden your knowledge of the party, I am enclosing a copy of my campaign book.

Cordially, Ed

Secretary's note: I will leave that one for Frank Small wood to respond to directly. I am reading Ed Clark's interesting book and was hoping to see him on the national scene again to enliven and sparkle the 1984 elections with debate, as well as his most articulate way of presenting the issues and alternatives.

The following item regarding Shorty Allison was picked up from the Wall StreetJournal:

"American Express Co. George W. Philips was elected chairman and chief executive officer of Boston Cos., a unit of Shearson American Express Inc., which is a subsidiary of this financial services firm. He succeeds Dwight L. Allison, who remains vice chairman. Mr. Philips continues as chairman and chief executive officer of Boston Safe Deposit & Trust Cos., a unit of Boston Co. James N. von Germeten succeeds Mr. Philips as president of Boston Co. Michael W. Christian succeeds Mr. von Germeten as president of Boston Safe Deposit."

Doug Gray, another good old friend, writes that Scott Paper is closing down Scott com, its in house advertising agency, where Doug has been since 1970. Doug's resume of achievements is truly impressive, so anyone knowing of an open spot for a senior executive manager in advertising or marketing services, please get in touch with me.

Finally, I'd like to pass on the word that the family of Ted Spalding, who, sadly, passed away on September 3, has requested that memorials in Ted's name be sent to the New Hampshire Heart Fund or to Weeks Memorial Hospital in New Hampshire.

See you next month with much more. Keep us posted.
