Kudos to Paul Orth and Dr. Jerry Block. Paul was elected president of the Hartford County Bar Association, the nation's second oldest, with 2,000 members.

Jerry represented Dartmouth at the inauguration of James Glenn as president of Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York.

Here is the commendation to Charlie Hood so ably written by Reed Bagley for the "Spirit of '51 Award" presented to Charlie last fall at our mini-reunion in Hanover:

"Charlie, you were not exactly undersized when we first met in 1951, but today you stand especially tall among us. With each successive year your stature grows as you reach out and touch so many with your sense of compassion and selfless dedication.

"For our class and Dartmouth your accomplishments have been many. From 1963 to 1965 you were our class agent, dispatching your duties with such aplomb that in 1965 we promoted you to class president. Your service to Dartmouth was amplified when you were elected president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Greater Boston. You were also on the national committee for the Dartmouth Medical School Campaign of 1960, a member of the Dartmouth Alumni Council, and a local executive committee member for the Third Century Fund. And who can forget your magnificent efforts as the national chairman of the Dartmouth Alumni Fund? Certainly the Campaign for Dartmouth did not when it enlisted your valuable experience and support as a member of the major gifts committee. Finally, your class and all of Dartmouth are grateful for the time and guidance you gave to the building committee for the Hood Museum of Art, which will stand as a perpetual reminder of your and your father's devotion and service to the College.

"Your concern and dedication to cause have enriched far more than Dartmouth. With a capable and compassionate hand you have reached out and touched many areas of human endeavor, especially in youth, health, and education. You are influential as an overseer of the Boys' and Girls' Clubs of Boston and as a trustee and corporation member of the Joslin Diabetes Center. You are; on the boards of New England Deaconess Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital Medical Center and serve on the Overseers' Visiting Committee of Harvard Medical School.

"The field of education benefits from your leadership as a trustee of Cardigan Mountain School, trustee and chairman of the Personnel Policies Committee of Lesley College, and an incorporator of Boston's Museum of Science. You have served on the Alumni Council of Phillips Academy, Andover, and were president of the Harvard Business School Greater Boston Alumni Association. Since 1968 you have been a trustee of the Opera Company of Boston.

"In business, your credentials are no less impressive. You were treasurer and, until its sale in 1980, served ten years on the board of directors of H.P. Hood and Sons, New England's largest dairy products company. You are now president of the Charles H. Hood Foundation, which provides, under your sensitive leadership, generous and muchneeded support to Boston hospitals and child-health research throughout New England. You are a director of the State Street Bank and Trust Company, treasurer of the Boston Study Group, past president of the Treasurers Club of Boston, life member of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Commercial Club of Boston.

"Charlie, your service to your class and Dartmouth has been meaningful, and your accomplishments in the outside world many. They are the result of a selfless dedication to cause and an acute sensitivity to the human dimension of life. This is the essence of the tributes we pay you tonight. It is with respect that your classmates proudly present you with the 'Spirit of '51 Award.' "
