It all happened last spring, but the reports reached us just this month, October.
On April 22 Paul Mahoney died suddenly in Pearl River, N.Y. You'll find an obituary further on in these pages, and some of you would probably like to know that Margie's present address is 3 Brattle Road, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.
A letter from daughter Lynn Ashby in Dunwoody, Ga., reveals that Althea Blanchard, Bill's widow, passed away on April 8. And Nancy Gibbs, Marston's widow, died in May in St. Petersburg, according to a note from son Christopher. Then, I trust you all saw the September ALUMNI MAGAZINE'S tributes to College Photographer Adrian Bouchard, an adopted '41, who died in June. Of many memories of Bouch and his camera, one that is special to the class of 1941 comes to mind: the recollection of him breaking all speed records in printing up a set of photos from the film of the Fifth Down Game that made possible the Dartmouth's extra and special edition commemorating that event.
And so to current events, the most newsworthy of which was, of course, the fall minireunion October 7-9, William and Mary weekend. I can do my own reporting on this one, as Barbara and I were among the celebrants.
Except for the fourth quarter of the football game, it was a rousing good time in the view of the 40 or so souls who participated in all or part of the proceedings thanks in large part to Dan Provost's great planning and execution. We were at the Sheraton North Country in West Leb this time, which enabled us to have private accommodations for a postgame class cocktail party and class dinners both nights; in addition, it was a quick and easy shot to and from Hanover.
The weekend troupe at the Sheraton included such regulars as Red and Clelia Higgins, Bruce Friedlich, Dan and Maxine Provost, Bob and Winnie Tepper, and Es andEllie Crowley. Up from Florida as usual were Gus and Stew Broberg, completing a New England visit and happy that son Pete has completed baseball and law school and has entered law practice with Gus in Palm Beach.
Jake Gidney came solo all the way from Reno, on his way to a vacation in Bermuda. Phil and Shirley Hall came on their last weekend before taking off for winter quarters in Longboat Key, Fla. Lou and BarbaraYoung had stopped off in Connecticut to see Lou III, who is so far having a successful season as Choate's football coach, and to coo over Lou IV; they bore with good humor all the bad jokes about how if they ever reach Louis XVI, we would have to guillotine him.
Steve and Lucy Winship were surprise arrivals, having returned only a few days before from a European trip which hooked into the Alumni College Abroad cruise to Greece, Turkey, and the Black Sea. One of their shipmates turned out to be Willis Nelson, on vacation from his CPA firm in Grand Rapids.
On hand for the whole weekend but not in residence at the Sheraton were Jordan andMarge Gotshall, going into the last week of their annual sojourn at Bonnie Oaks; Bill andCary Clark, driving back and forth from their home in Norwich; and Bill and Jean Hotaling, now happily settled in Hanover after Bill's retirement.
Ed and Bess Acker arrived for the class picnic in Leverone and the football game, as did Don and Jane Hanks with two grandchildren in tow. Ed and Barbara Lamer and Dick andLocke Tousley were spending Columbus Day Weekend together at a nearby resort and had to rush off right after the game.
Sally Frechette was occupied with trusteetype duties during the day at the Med School, I think it was but joined us for the post-game cocktail party and dinner. So did Beanie and Babs Nutt the holiday weekend is peak season at their airport on Lake Fairlee, and they'd been busy all day taking care of tourists who like to view autumn foliage from the air.
A highlight of the evening festivities was an opportunity for all of us to meet and chat with our guest, Raul Yanes '87, whom a class committee had chosen in September as the first recipient of the Class of 1941 Memorial Scholarship. Raul is of Cuban descent and came to Dartmouth from Cherry Hill, N.J., though his parents have just moved to Bethlehem, Pa. He's a bright, articulate, hardworkin young man whom I hope more of you have a chance to meet in the next three years.
Finally, a class meeting was convened Sunday morning. A report on that was sent to Don Hagen for circulation via "DFTD," and since you should have read it by now, I'll repeat only one item: The group voted unanimously to hold next year's fall reunion at the Sheraton again and also set the date. You have your 1984 calendars on the wall by now, so mark it down the weekend of October 20, for the Harvard game.
There's a lot more news on hand but no more space. I do, though, want to squeeze in one note that arrived the first of the month. From Dotty Redington: "I am going to be married to Bradford Jealous, graduate of Bowdoin, class of 1941, on October 8, 1983. I will be living at 16 Westwood Road, Wellesley, MA 02181."
Page Smith '40 and his wife Eloise were all smiles at the unveiling of a plaque last May namingthe library at Cowell College, University of California at Santa Cruz, in his honor. More on thededication ceremony is in the 1940 class notes column.
