The word came just too late to make last month's column: Alex Tarumianz died in November after a long illness. "His love for Dartmouth and the wonderful years he spent there were among his fondest memories," Isabella wrote. "We stopped in Hanover at every opportunity, traveled with Dartmouth alumni trips, and participated in several programs." You'll find an obituary in this or a subsequent issue.

You should also know that- we have an indirect and unconfirmed report that TylerHopkins died last September. Tyler left Dartmouth well before graduation and, as far as I can determine, hasn't been in touch with either the class or the College since. His last known address was Rockville Centre, N.Y. If anybody knows anything about Tyler, please let me know. Let us, then, move on to the pages of TheWall Street Journal, upon which two of our classmates were enscribed last fall.

As I told you in November, Bill Cashel, after retiring as vice chairman of AT&T, became vice chairman of Campbell Soup Company. Even as you were reading that, however, he was being elevated to chairman of the board of Campbell. He was elected, explains the WSJ, "as a transitional chairman in a move designed to give R. Gordon McGovern, chief executive officer and the next likely chairman, more time to groom a successor. Mr. Cashel, 64 years old, is expected to serve ... for a year or two before turning over the job to Mr. McGovern."

A week later, the newspaper reported that Warner Bishop had resigned as president and board chairman of Transohio Financial Corporation, Ohio's biggest savings and loan holding company, "after apparent differences with new majority shareholders, Miami-based American Capital Corporation." Warner was alleged to be resigning because of "philosophical differences" with American Capital, but he himself declined all comment beyond the fact that "he doesn't have any immediate plans."

So much for the fast lane. Back to our more normal pace.

A note from Dusty Rodes says that "Sandyand Mary Courter stopped to visit Skipper and me at Key Biscayne on their way to Panama for a cruise through the Canal. We all hope to make the reunion next June."

On the heels of that came a missive from Sandy himself, updating us on his latest travels: "Just came back from ten days in Colorado and New Mexico. Invited out for dinner in Colorado Springs by Mort McGinley, who was married in July, and for lunch in Santa Fe by Les Davis, who was on his way to Las Cruces for a meeting."

And finally, there's a good newsy letter from Pete Jacobsen, who is no longer in Florida but at Sagamore Beach, Mass. "I am now in my second year of retirement from international oil exploration with Exxon, mainly in the Caribbean and Latin America, but with dashes of Western Europe and North Africa. This added up to 41 years, about half based in Venezuela and the rest in Miami.

"In retirement, Jackie and I have migrated upstream from the Sunbelt to our longtime second home on Cape Cod. We are now in easy range of Hanover for the first time in decades. We were there last April for a reunion of geology graduates in honor of retiring professors Stoiber and Lyons. It was a three-day affair, and the class of 1941 was there in force. I had the pleasure of seeing George Kruger and Jim Page again after many years.

"Jackie and I will likely attend the 45th. Meanwhile, we are preparing for a camera safari to Kenya in February an escape to equatorial regions for a part of the New England winter."

Dr. William David '4l, left, represented Dartmouth at the inauguration of Dr. Robert Chambers, right,as the seventh president of Western Maryland College, on November 10, 1984.
