The class has another celebrity. Did you see the spread in the October 31 Fortune on Denny Denniston?
There Denny is, in living color, clad only in his Speedo, being rinsed off after completing the first leg of the Manufacturers Hanover "Mighty Hamptons Triathlon," a 1.5-mile swim. He did it in 44 minutes, which works out to under 30 minutes a mile, which is extremely respectable. Most folks would be happy to swim a mile in 44 minutes, let alone 1.5 miles.
He did the whole thing including the 25- mile bike ride and the ten-mile run in 3:29.41, good enough for 136 th place.
There's also a picture of him being massaged at the end. The magazine says Denny already was in good shape when he began four months of triathlon training, averaging about eight hours a week. His goal was to complete it in four hours.
The magazine featured Denny, who is executive vice president of National Westminster Bank USA, as part of its regular "On Your Own Time" feature. Anybody else a triathlete?
Where is everybody? Members of the class of 1961 other than those who work or live on the Hanover Plain have been rare birds this faH. About the only other '61s to come back have been those with sons or daughters at the College.
It meant we had just a handful for the Dartmouth Night parade, compared to good crowds for the classes of 1960,1962, and 1963. Henry Eberhardt marched, along with BobHargraves, Hartley Webster, and PeteBleyler. Bob, by the way, is a consultant in Cambridge and still commutes there from his home in Hanover.
Here's the latest list of the sons and daughters of 1961 who are current students, or, as Henry calls them, "1961 legacies":
In the freshmen class that is completing its first term (class of 1987) are Harold Benton Ambler, son of Read Ambler; Jeffrey Alden Barton, son of Ralph Barton; Allison Clark Bleyler, daughter of Pete Bleyler; Alec D. Hugo, son of David Hugo; Jennifer Louise Lampl, daughter of George Lampl; Enrico Peter Marrone, son of Richard "The Paisan"Marrone; Susan Jane Olson, daughter of Albert Olson; Eric David Overton, son of DavidOverton; and Christin Lee Webster, daughter of Hartley Webster. As we indicated earlier, Ralph Barton is the current champion in the class, with two other undergrads as well Ralph Jr. in the class of 1984 and Beth in the class of 1985. Ron Wybranowski has two children at the College Ron Jr. '85 and Lisa '86.
Also having children at Dartmouth are Chuck Chapman (Chuck III '84, current head of the Interfraternity Council and the only class child to date to have a 1961 instructor, me, in policy studies); John Zabriskie (Regina Figge '84); Hank Gerfen (Henry Jr. '84); Russ Holmes (Susan '84); Richard Boardman (Stephanie '85); Bill Cogswell (David '85); David "Lash" Lashar (J. David '85); JarrettScott (John '85); Tom Baseler (Heidi '86); Bruce Johnson (Lisa '86); Tony Oestreicher (Elizabeth '86); Charles Peterson (Charles II '86); Ken Quickel (Robert '86); and Harry"Bud" Schoening (Mark '86).
As you might expect, I'm having a ball though I'm also finding out that teaching, if given every effort, is not easy. This past week I gave two one-hour lectures to a class of 96 and conducted two two-hour seminars for a class of 15 both requiring many hours of outside class preparation. All of this stuff, by the way, is focused on media issues, so I am talking from knowledge (rather than the lack of it).
And I spent virtually all day and evening yesterday working with students on one. of the two assignments I had given (one to each class), answering or suggesting where they might go for answers.
Since the Magazine's editor, Doug Greenwood '66, has already asked me for a longer piece on what it's like to return to Dartmouth, I won't say anything more about Dartmouth in the fall except to comment that nearly all of you missed a fine, fine fall. We ought, right now, to pick a weekend next fall and shoot to get at least 100 of us back here to enjoy ourselves. My only regret is that I've seen so few classmates.
Noel Kuhrt represented Dartmouth and '61 at the 150 th anniversary convocation at the University of Delaware this past September 30.
And that's all for now.
