Well, if I called the wrong number, why did you answer the 'phone?

James Thurber

Don't fret, my friends, you have dialed the correct number. This is the place. Professor Kemeny maintains that "80" is Dartmouth's prime number . . .

Comment allez vous, Mark Alperin? Since his days as an LSA (Blois, France) ambassador of goodwill, tout va bien for Alpo. Following graduation, he earned his M.B.A. at Duke University and then spent a year with the celebrated "HAWGS." Alpo signed with the Washington Redskins as the first string business manager of the term. Throughout the 1982-83 season, among other duties, Mark made all of the travel arrangements for the outfit which won the Super Bowl last January. Imagine telling John Riggins where to sleep at night. At the end of the season, Mark opted for free agency and is now living in New York and playing for a new team on Wall Street.

Helping to bring New England banks into the 20th century is Bob Hill. As a customer support representative for BKW Inc., Bob installs computerized banking systems. Bob assures me the New Hampshire and Vermont banks which have installed his system are now able to bounce my checks faster and more accurately than ever before. Ahh, progress . . .

From the shores of Lake Michigan to the halls of the M.B.A.: Parker Small has forsaken the Chicago advertising world for the corporate financial management world at Harvard.

Kiss the babies and pass out the cigars and get it straight this time! Congratulations to John Mac Govern, who is now an elected official. John had heard that his local congressional representative had to vacate office in the middle of term. A native of Harvard, Mass., John fought to get on the ballot and won the special election. You may hear more about John in the future. I understand Jack Anderson is already keeping tabs on him.

Car 54, where are you? In an adventure that would warm the heart of Jules Verne, Paula Ness spent a year and a half on an island off South Korea. As a Peace Corps volunteer, Paula directed the tuberculosis control program in a rural public health center on the island of 120,000 people. She also assisted a local doctor in a leprosy clinic. Paula admits that such jobs were not for the squeamish. I guess not . . . and bears live in the woods, too. Apparently the Peace Corps experience has aided Paula in gaining a different perspective on the international business world which she is now studying at Columbia University.

As the Brides Go Tearing By: Highlighting this month's nuptial news report is an event at Gloucester-by-the-Sea, Mass. A veritable army of blue, green, and gold coats readied the Mussel Point parade grounds for the reception, while Albert Ellis softly whistled "Get Me to the Church on Time." Shortly after Ms. Miranda Winthrop became Mrs. Albert Ellis, the bride and groom returned with a cast of thousands to the reception. Cast members included: Denise Dupre (who graduated from Cornell's School of Hotel Management and is now a hotel industry consultant in New York), Blake Shepard, GeoffEdelson, Bill Finnegan (who now has a rugby-induced broken nose to highlight his second year at Tuck), Bill Helman, Jerry Bird (who recently earned his pilot's license at Hanscomb Field in Massachusetts; BostonGlobe headline: "Bird-Man Earns Wings"), Rick Brook, Peter Marlette, Bob Lisk (who is selling gourmet coffee in Boston this is legal, Merle), Tom Vieth, Bobby Garry (who astounded everyone at a recent Halloween blast with his convincingly authentic Dorothy impression; Bob even toted a Toto-in-the-bas- ket which sounds like something for the marketing folks at Colonel Sanders's outfit).

The Wright Stuff, continued: Chuck Jarrett ("Mr. April"), whose heroics were once the saving grace of Dartmouth baseball campaigns, has made another fine play. Chuck married Miss Laura Lee Wright at Russell Sage Chapel, Northfield Mount Hermon School in Northfield, Mass. Mr. Jarrett is enrolled at the University of Michigan Law School. Mrs. Jarrett is a cum laude graduate of the law school and is an associate at Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo in Boston.

Congratulations to Ron Martignetti, who married Miss Lynne Ann Romano in Fitchburg, Mass., last August. Ron, whose family name hangs above the greatest beverage stores in New England, is enrolled at Suffolk University Law School. (Note: "Beverage" is a colloquial Boston term for beer.) Mrs. Martignetti is a graduate student at the University of New Hampshire.

Elsewhere in sports: Congratulations to Bob Silberman, who is engaged to Miss Tina Jones. From one Bay Area to another: Give a hearty high five to Leigh Limbach and RoyJohnson, who live and work in Boston; but come June 9, 1984, they will marry in San Francisco. Tony Bennett will be there.

Make-Way-for-Ducklings Department: Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Chris LaBocca, who are/were expecting a child in November! And the crowd roared, "Yeah ..." Happy and healthy holidays to all.
