Greetings and salutations, this day after the blizzard of 1983. The winter has been so mild that today was the first time I could get out on the cross-country skis that Santa brought for Christmas. Here in scenic Stamford, the best skiing was along the sides of the roads where the plows had thrown up mounds of snow. Generally 0.K., except one had to be careful not to cross tips and plummet off the overpasses on to the New England Thruway.
After my impassioned appeal for mail last time, there were a few responses. The best letter was from Mike Gracey's mother. Mike was badly injured several years ago and is a quadriplegic. His mother said that Mike's most recent physical therapy report disclosed that he has tone in every muscle, and that in time and with work he can regain use of them. Truly great news. Mike's attitude is quite positive, and he enjoys the notes and letters from his friends from the Big Green. Keep up the hard work, Mike, and let us know how it is going.
From the Boston area comes news that BillAydelott has managed to keep his television station, WBZ, at the top of the morning news ratings with his inspired promotion of the Maynard in the Morning show. It seems that Bill has this guy Maynard hang from helicopters and ride around on the tops of cars, and this seems to get people's attention. Anyway, a Wah- Hoo-Wah for Bill and his awards.
And now a little self quiz. Answer honestly. Do doctors lie to you? Do you dream about winning the lottery, but never buy a ticket? Do you always choose the slowest line at the supermarket? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are probably just a tiny bit neurotic. But fear not, for one of our classmates has just what you need. Chuck Monagan has published a book entitled The Neurotic's Handbook, and it appears to answer all the questions we have all had but were afraid to ask.
From the Big Apple comes news that Jim McKinney has forsaken the cushy life of the corporate lawyer for the reality of the D.A.'s office. So, if your adventures take you into New York, watch it. Jim started at the end of February, and he is working with Robert Morganthau as an assistant district attorney with responsibility in narcotics, fraud, rackets, and all kinds of other good stuff.
That's it for this month. The next time you read this column we may be well on the way to spring. And also, the mail box is pretty empty now, except for a note from Fabian Ropogol, who said that he thinks the Redskins are for real and that John Riggins showed what a guy in early middle age, like the rest of us, could do if he put his mind to it.
