By the time you read this in April, a testimonial dinner will already have taken place honoring C. Willard Heckel on his retirement after 37 years of teaching at Rutgers School of Law. Bill joined our class from '34 mid-way in his Dartmouth career and established a very commendable scholastic r.ecord. With an M.A. from Columbia in 1936 and an LL.B. from Rutgers in 1940, Bill joined the faculty there in 1946. Additionally, he served as dean from 1963 to 1970. Hundreds of students have been inspired by his teaching and example. He also found time to serve as moderator of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. Our congratulations to a fellow member of the class of 1935!
As reported last month, Bob Richter keeps us up to date on the comings and goings of classmates in Florida. Add now to his list of last month Jack and Leah Rubin, Reg and BabsBankart, Bill and Helen Clark, Frank andEdie Specht, and A l and Jean Sherwood!
Bill Krieg, now retired from his long and wide experience with the U.S. State Department, continues on an assignment of historical research for it. Look for a piece some day with the probable title of "Bolivia's Quest for the Sea."
Hanover visitors for an exciting, if less than highly successful, hockey season included DickHube, Sax Zieman, Put Kingsbury, and Hall Colton.
Yet another facet of the wonderfully varied career of Bill Gahagan comes to light! We've recently known of him as president and founder of the California Friends of Robert Frost. Now, he has recently sent along a newspaper clipping covering a ceremony honoring him as the first executive secretary of the Tor House Foundation in San Francisco! How about this for a winner of a varsity "D" on the 1949 tennis team?
It was so good recently to hear from DickMontgomery. At the time I'm writing this he and Betty are off to Phoenix for rest and recuperation after all of the trauma they've both been through. Here's hoping extended hospitalization for them is now something of the past! Dick recently lunched with Ted Huck and Herb Knowles. Ted is wintering in Palm Desert and Herb has "gone bonkers over tennis, playing four or five mornings a week."
By the way, your secretary was able to do for Dick what he could for you, providing names, addresses, and telephone numbers of classmates in an area you may plan to visit. Can't guarantee everyone will hear from everyone, but this could be helpful!
We can now report another addition to the roster of classmates living in what we call the Upper Valley. Bill and Florrie Fitzhugh have bought a very attractive and spacious home right in Norwich, Vt. They'll be moving shortly from their long-time residence in Chappaqua, N.Y., to join the locals who always look forward to seeing any and all of you.
It's not too early to be making your plans for 1935's fall reunion. As usual, we'll gather at the time of the second home football game, this one with Holy Cross. Come on Friday, September 30, and you'll be in on all the fun!
Hold the presses for a major last-minute announcement! The Muzzy family count has just been increased by the birth of a third grandson Born to daughter Martha and her husband, Bob Nilsen, young Garrett had the good judgment (hereditary, of course) to arrive exactly on his grandmother's birthday. At this moment on day two, everyone doing fine including exultant grandpa, your secretary!
