For five years now, April has been a slow news month. I must admit that in my immature past I would have been inclined to stretch the truth a bit just to generate some interest. You know the stuff: Fred Seligsen has been seen skiing in the Italian Alps with Lady Di, Scott Axford will star opposite Linda Ronstadt in The Pirates of Penzance, Scott Brown has become president of Semper, or the E.P.A.'s Anne Burford has maintained her job due only to a favorable comparison to Jack Kiernan. However, I do not have to stoop quite so low today.
You will have to indulge me this month. Because you have not written, most of my news comes from Webster Avenue. You can teach an old dog new tricks, but he still does them like an old dog.
Some good news this month in the Gary Traynor household, as Pie and Becky await the birth of their first child. Before you wonder if this may turn into another sequel to The Omen, let me remind you that Becky must be a saint to put up with Pie; therefore, the child will likely turn out quite normal. The Traynors are following the lead of their good friends, the David Mathewses, who live in the Denver area with their son Mookie. Dave is a resident at a Denver hospital, concentrating in his specialty, golf injury medicine. Mookie may someday grow up to admire the intelligence of the O'Connors' daughter, Katie, who is growing up in Wilmington, Del. The O'Connors will likely want to keep their daughter away from a disco named "G.G.'s," on Wilmington's swanky east side, owned by J. C. Carney. The entrepreneurial spirit seems to have permeated the Boys of Beta, as Bill Kelso is supplementing his income from Black and Decker by operating Baltimore's largest camel farm. Similarly, Tony Cort is slowly becoming a leading Chicago restaurant mogul. He also is heading the Harold Washington for mayor campaign. Sam Coffey is finishing his last year of law school at Santa Clara. Sammy has been joined on the coast by Frenchy La La Jackmauh. In his usual pattern, Phil passed the Massachusetts bar exam and moved to California the next day to look for a job. I guess he figured that DeLorean may need a lawyer. Finally, Jim Vailas is at George Washington Hospital.
The First Annual Sandinistan Love In took place last month in Taos, N.M. This event featured Don Kendall, Al MacPhail, Andy Sherman '77, and Bob End '77, who were seeking the true causes of civil war in Central America while shushing down the slopes. This outing also represented a return to bachlorhood for these old married men.
This June will mark both a union and a reunion for Jim Bassett. Bass plans to marry Dr. Elizabeth Adams of Hawaii via Dartmouth Med School. Jim is clerking for a federal judge in Boston and plans to join the firm of Hale, Dorr and Bird.
Jheri Widdicombe's Reunion Reminders: Reunion Fees May Be Tax Deductible. Wid continues to battle the I.R.S. to make money spent on reunions tax deductible. It is the classic political debate; on one hand we have the massive federal deficit, and on the other a tax break to stimulate consumption. At any rate, Jheri is doing everything in his power to generate some enthusiasm, so please respond soon and positively. Let's have a record turnout for the class of 1978.
An additional word from Charlie Wise: well over 400 classmates are planning to make it back on June 16-19, and they will drag along over 200 friends. Be part of the crowd!
