News of 1912ers is scarce these days, but we have recently received word of a very nice award presented posthumously to our classmate Lewis Clyde Cooke and to his widow, Erma Wheeler Cooke. They were the recipients of the 1984 "Cowell Cup Award" from Cushing Academy in Massachusetts. Clyde served Cushing for a period of 41 years, chairing the science department, coaching debate, skiing, and tennis, serving as a mentor and advisor to generations of students, and establishing the school's outing club, winter carnival, and yearbook. He was cited as "a true Renaissance man" and "the 'Mr. Chips' of his era" in the award. "His wit and wisdom, his courage and compassion, his devotion and unselfishness made him a gift to the Academy and to his profession," concluded the citation. Clyde was also a loyal contributor to Dartmouth and was always active in the affairs of the class of 1912. "Pansy," who was present to accept the award from Cushing, was also a member of the Cushing faculty for 17 years and served as a house parent for many years. The award described her as a "devoted friend of the Academy for nearly 70 years." We're pleased to be able to share word of this much deserved award.
