This has to be written a couple of days before Dartmouth Yale festivities in New Haven and about a week before the minireunion gathering in Hanover, so reports on both must wait till next month. That, plus the fact that your duesnotice missives have not yet started to reach Essex, means news is scarce this month.
The cupboard isn't entirely bare, however. We have a letter from Don Brown relating that he and Fred Meyer and Dusty Rodes found themselves shipmates this past summer aboard the M/S Akademik Viktor Glushkov, bound for Russia on an Alumni College Abroad trip. "It was very interesting, but I think we are all going to keep our American citizenship."
Barbara and Lou Young wrote, sending regrets that they would have to pass up minireunion this year. Lou has been having circulatory problems in legs and feet, which put him in the hospital for a while. Treatments have improved matters, but there will be more doctoring ahead. They figure, however, to be able to take off in February for their annual Florida sojourn.
Our local newspaper reported a few weeks ago that the Reverend George Dreher had retired from his pastorate in Mystic, Conn., and a phone check with George confirms that this is, indeed, a fact. He retired August 1 after two decades of service as minister of the Mystic Congregational Church. They're staying in Mystic Kathryn is still teaching school and he confesses to learning the first rule of retirement: The more free time you're supposed to have, the less you actually have.
Another retirement report must be temporarily classed as rumor. My usually reliable spies within the Connecticut Education Association say that Robbins Barstow is about to retire from that organization after more than 30 years. I haven't yet been able to reach Rob for comment, but will keep trying.
As Don Hagen told you in the newsletter, we've belatedly received word that Art Chimiklas died in June. He had retired from his anesthesiology practice a few years ago. All of us who used to flail around in intramural baseball and who ever argued with one of Art's umpiring calls will say an extra prayer in his memory. An obituary will follow.
