Fall comes to New England truly beautiful with crisp mornings and colored leaves, and then a touch of Indian summer before winter's blast (I felt the latter in Denver in mid-October it can be pretty also, but it takes some getting used to again).
The beauty of fall was indeed evident on the Harvard weekend as a group of us met for a mini reunion in and around Pierce's Lodge. This was our largest, most enthusiastic gathering since we began the fall minireunion series five years ago. Some 56 classmates and spouses/friends and at least 28 offspring were on campus for some part of the weekend. Of that total, 47 adults and 26 kids joined in at least part of the reunion activities, and the rest were seen at the game or parties surrounding it.
Undoubtedly the turnout was due in no small part to my fearless prognostication about our football fortunes now, if only the team could live up to its advance billing. As my wife says, Dartmouth is on the track of an "unwinning" season not for long, we trust.
There will be a more complete report on the mini reunion festivities in the next newsletter, but let me note some of the highlights. Dartmouth Night was noteworthy for a crowd which stretched from Parkhurst to the steps of Dartmouth Hall, for an alumni parade which saw '65 represented in strength for the first time, and for a fine bonfire. We had class meetings Friday afternoon (for early arrivals) and Saturday morning to discuss plans for our 20th, set for next June 14-16 (put those dates on your calendar and plan to attend). Reunion chairman Larry Duffy prom- ises fun and frolic and is looking for any of you with ideas and/or an interest in helping put it all together. Reunion giving cochairmen Ted Atkinson and Carl Boe described the process by which we could maximize our reunion contribution to the College; they will be urging us all to make the 20 year stretch! Anne Peyton and Kerstin Sonnerup 'BO from the Capital Gifts office joined us to give the College's perspective. Dartmouth is not in a campaign mode, but there are capital projects underway and unrestricted endowment is a major priority.
Saturday evening provided a time for reacquainting with classmates and with a group of '64s who joined us. Sunday brought relaxing time before we scattered with a promise to meet again in June. Jim Griffiths did a super job as chairman of our mini reunion and is already planning for next year.
Present for one or another part of the weekend were: Jim Griffiths and Linda Morley; Jack and Sue Heidbrink and two offspring; Allen and Judy Zern and two; David andSandy Graham; Bob and Sharon Blake; Tedand Ann Atkinson and three; Gary and Stephanie Bucher and two; head agent BillWebster and two; Larry Duffy; president Jock Hosmer and one; Ted Bracken; Jim andKaren Frank and two; Tim and CarollMcLaughlin and two; John Heavenrich and Ruth Carlson; Mike Orr and Jeannine Dav- ignon; Steve and Linda Waterhouse and two; Tom and Sarah Campbell; Roger and NancyHanson and two; Bruce and Alice Jolly and two; Carl Boe and Mimi Reusch; BrianWalsh; Rich and Jennifer Joseph; John andGretchen Bullock and two; Brian and Melinda Porzak and two; Rich and MahalaBeams and two; Clay and Kit Hawkins and two; Doug Leitch and Pat Sava; Bob Ziemian;Doug Miller; Bill Duchatko; Mike Gonnerman; Dennis Purnell and BB Kelly; Roddyand Diane Powers; and Sven Karlen and family. An outstanding group, all looking forward to next year. Reg and Nancy Pierce were most hospitable innkeepers and we've already reserved the lodge for next fall.
For those of you who haven't made a minireunion yet, it's a great time and well worth the trek back to Hanover for fun and good fellowship. We'll forgive you, though, if you make it to the 20th in June. Future columns will include comments from or updates about some of those listed earlier. In the meantime, it would be great to hear from some of the rest of you my address is up top.
A year end reminder: If you're thinking already of your reunion gift, remember that you have three calendar years to use: end of '84, all of '85, and January '86. If you have any questions, call Libby Roberts at the College or contact me at 617/253-8243 (O) or 617/ 235-3139 (H) and I'll answer or refer you to someone who can.
'Nuff for now. Best wishes for the happiest of holiday seasons. Keep the faith.
