It's a phenomenon much like Halley's Comet. Every so often, the Vermont men's ski team does not win a Winter Carnival competition. And when that happens, the Dartmouth men pride themselves on being the spoiler.

Down by eight points after one day of competition, the Big Green rallied on the second day of the Dartmouth Winter Carnival to hand perennial powerhouse Vermont a 302-289 defeat. The victory was the first for the Dartmouth men in their own carnival since 1975. And ironically, Vermont's most recent carnival loss was in 1982 at the University of New Hampshire Winter Carnival thanks again to Dartmouth.

"I told the team earlier in the year that we have a team that can win winter carnivals and do well at the NCAA Championship," said Dartmouth Coach John Morton.

Jory Macomber led the charge with victories in the slalom and giant slalom races moved to Pico Peak because of snow conditions at the Skiway. The alpine events were definitely the difference. During the giant slalom, the Big Green claimed six of the top 13 finishers. And in the slalom, Dartmouth chalked up three of the top five finishes. After Macomber, Kevin Omland was third with Art Lussi fifth.

As expected, the Vermont women won their portion of the carnival although Coach Martha Rockwell's Dartmouth team came closer to the Catamounts than any squad all season. Vermont scored 272 points to Dartmouth's 254.5.

Leslie Thompson '86 (who was featured along with Tiger Shaw '85 in last month's issue of the Magazine) won the 7.5 kilometer cross country race while teammate Sarah Millham was second in the women's slalom.
