June 11-13: the Fifty-and-Fifth. Come! Heinie Richardson writes from Mount Dora, Florida, with a good news/bad news item from the Dartmouth Club of Central Florida in Orlando. They recently had two members of the Review as speakers. Says Heinie, "According to these young men almost nothing is right at the College. Especially bad is the faculty and the businessman-turned-college-president who doesn't even consult with a sophomore editor before recommending a policy!"

The good news is that they had eight or ten students from the area at their December meeting, of which he says, "Without exception they were as pleased with the College in every way, as we were. You couldn't have asked for a pleasanter or nicer group of young people." Heinie and Margaret live six months in Laconia and six in Florida.

Dan Marx enclosed a fine check with these words on John Dickey: "The enclosed is but a token of my esteem for John as a friend and of my appreciation of the great things he achieved for Dartmouth." Speaking of Dartmouth doings he says, "No one can ever satisfy all the members of a faculty, so forget about trying to." I can hear "amens" from our administrator friends who have to keep trying. Dan also sends his hope that HarryBaehr's coming eye operations are successful. Harry could use a few of your letters for " '29 Up."

Cornell University announces its appreciation of the receipt of case files (78 feet of them!) to be known as the "Dr. John Cornehlsen Papers." Cornell said in part, "Such data as is collected here is seldom available. These records should prove to be of great use and of major significance."

Bob Lyle sends regrets for the 55th. Carolyn is having heart surgery and their son is still on a long road to recovery from a major accident. Many of our classmates find them-selves doing all the chores and carrying the load of keeping folks alive. It's easy to forget how lucky most of us are. Three members of our Cape Cod Club come for lunch and hurry out to get back to home responsibilities. A phone call or a note is an easy thing to do. They're heart-warmers. Don't forget.

That eternal flame of Dartmouth, Ort Hicks '21, put me in touch with Ed Plumb's brother Sam '21, who sent us the story of a great gift in Ed's honor from Walt Disney Studios to the Streator, III., High School on its 100th anniversary. They gave the original score of Bambi, of which Ed was co-composer, and also various pictures of Ed and lectures he gave when he was musical director to explain the part of music in Disney Productions.

Ed was music director and arranger with Disney for 22 years until his death in 1957. They tell of an episode when Walt was receiving the first rushes of Bambi with Ed. Walt stopped things and asked to hear the sound track from Fantasia. When he heard a particularly strong bit he stopped things and told Ed, "That's what you want." Ed protested, "But, Walt, that's Beethoven." Disney's answer was, "Yeah?" All he wanted was for Ed to equal it.

I remember Ed's warm smile, sometimes droll, when we were trying to be tracksters. Ed was an enthusiastic high-jumper, competing with Tom Maynard and Inches Pierce, who were a head taller. He didn't enjoy studies until he switched to music. He was leader of the Instrumental Club and a star of the Barbary Coast. President Hopkins arranged with Huntley Spaulding '27 for a West Coast scholarship for Ed. He later studied in Europe, spent more than a year with Leopold Stokowski, and did arrangements for Paul Whiteman, Vincent Lopez, and other popular greats of our time. His contribution to all of us was great, in his relatively few years.

They run a circus (minus acts) With lots of speeches (minus facts). They try to trip us or entwine us And hope somehow to undermine us.

For Dartmouth's Democratic Carnival this winter I offer the following, entitled "The Candid(?)ates": Despairing of a proper choice We hear old stuff from every voice And strive somehow to keep our feet And know which candidate to beat!
