Russ Dilks sent me a clipping from TheNewYork Times noting that on December 13, 1982, Jim Asker married Stephanie E. Miller in Manhattan at Christ and St. Stephen Episcopal Church. Stephanie is a psychotherapist, a licensed marriage counselor, and a director of the Women's Counseling and Psychotherapy Service in New Jersey as well as of the Wall Street Counseling Center in New York. Jim is president of the Jim Asker Company.
Reed Badgley, class award committee chairman, writes that nominees for our second "Spirit of '51" class award are now open. The award will be given to that class member who, in the judgement of his classmates and the executive committee, has done the most for Dartmouth and/or distinguished himself in his profession or through public service to his community or country. However, this year greater emphasis will be given to a candidate's service to the College. Because it is intended that this award be presented at a mini-reunion some time this fall, Reed asks that nominations be submitted in writing no later than July 31. Sam Chu, an authority on late 19th- and early 20th-century Chinese history and a professor of history at Ohio State University, has been appointed Georgetown University's Sun Yat-sen Professor of China Studies for the fall 1982 semester at its School of Foreign Service. Sam is teaching a seminar in Chinese history and offering a series of public lectures on the subject of his research and forthcoming book. During the past year, he was in China completing research on reform and modernization in 19th-century China and on the Sino-Japanese War of 1894—95. The Sun Yat-sen Professorship is part of an agreement between Georgetown and National Chengchi University, on Taiwan, which includes an annual symposium on public policy issues, joint research and translation, the development of library resources on Chinese civilization, and the exchange of scholars and students. The program was initiated in 1980 by a $500,000 gift over a five-year period from National Chengchi University.
A native of Shanghai, Sam has lived in the United States since 1941. After Dartmouth, Sam received an M.A. in 1953 and a Ph.D. in 1958 at Columbia University. He then taught at Bucknell University and the Universities of Pittsburgh and Michigan before becoming pro- fessor of history at Ohio State. Sam has written extensively on Chinese history. He is the author of Reformer in Modern China: Chang Chien,1853—1926, co-author of Passage to the GoldenGate: A History of the Chinese in America to 1910, and a contributor to The Future of Taiwan, ADifference of Opinion. His professional activities include serving on the board of directors of the Association for Asian Studies and as the president of the Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs. He is the recipient of many professional honors, including a Fulbright Scholarship in Taiwan, designation as a Danforth Associate, and membership on the Social Science Research Council.
Pete Krehbiel of Stamford, Conn., has been ■ president, administration, by Acco Babcock Inc., a diversified manufacturer with corporate offices in Fairfield, Conn. Pete, associated with Acco Babcock since 1964, has served as secretary and general counsel, and as vice president for the past few years. He received a law degree from New York University after Dartmouth. Acco Babcock Inc. is the principal operating company for the North American interests of Babcock International Inc., London, England. The four major operating groups of the company conduct separate manufacturing operations at 21 different plant locations in the U.S. and Canada.
Father "Dick" Ellis was honored in February at a 25th anniversary celebration, marking the quarter-century since his ordination as an Episcopal priest. Dick is the rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Pine Meadow, Conn.
