There is no current news except that your secretary has been hospitalized, causing him to be late for the May 1 deadline for this June issue.
This is the 70th year of the Alumni Fund. Nate Whiteside and his sub-agents are hoping 1920 will finish well, both in percent of participation and amount of dollars raised.
Hibbard Richter kindly sent an obituary on Charles Crathern that was published in the Worcester, Mass., Gazette. I'm sorry I hadn't had this as a source in writing Charlie's obituary which was printed in the March issue, because it included details of Charles's extensive and colorful military career. He joined the Dartmouth College Unit of the American Field Service in 1917 and drove an ambulance in Europe. When the U.S. entered the war four months later, he enlisted in the Army's 56th Pioneer Infantry. After his release from the military he joined the Near East foundation, and had supervision of athletics and recreation. While in Greece, he joined the Greek Army, serving with the Greek forces in Turkey in the Greek-Turkish campaign of 1921- 22 and was a guest at the wedding of King Carol of Romania to Princess Hellen of Greece.
He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and saw action in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and southern France. In 1949 he joined Operation Haylift, an emergency program to air-drop food, fuel, and hay to snowstranded families and their livestock in the Rocky Mountain states during one of the worst winters in the West's history.
He was also very active in a New Hampshire alumni group of the classes of '20 and '21. "He was the leader," said Hibbard. "Our group will never be the same again."
So, with no more current news, we will be LOOKING BACK to June 1924: "Murray C.Harvey stepped off to wedding bells April 21. His better half, Miss Dorothy Tower, is a Wellesley graduate. Hal Bernkoff was married to Miss Elizabeth Rintells in Boston May 17. During the secretary's recent trip to Hanover, he had the pleasure of meeting Miss Janet Frey, who had the honor of being the class baby of the class of 1922 at Connecticut College."
Allan Cate, who had served his class as secretary since September 1982, died at home on May 13. The class notes column which follows was written a few weeks before his death. He had continued valiantly to discharge the duties of his office despite recent illness. A full obituary will appear in an upcoming issue of the Magazine.
