This is written in mid-August to meet the deadline, but by the time you read it, our September 21 mini-reunion will be over. Thus, a report on it must wait.
To get a reading on the prospects, however, I called Lucy Cogswell last night, and she said an excellent attendance is in the cards and all arrangements are set up, as they always are.
The only news I've had comes from this call to Lucy. She said that Bill and LeeSchuldenfrei were in town, attending the Alumni College, as they had planned. Also, Marny Hawkins, widow of George, was on the Hanover scene. In addition, Charles and Emmy Hill have been summering at Quechee to escape the Florida heat as have Ed and Carol Studwell at Newfoundland Lake.
These visitors and the '31 local gentry (and gentrettes) had a party at Lucy's about two weeks before my call, and another was planned for the following week, especially for the Schuldenfreis, who missed the first one.
After writing the above, I had a lastminute telephone talk with Ed Maas at his Lakewood, N.J., home, which makes him virtually a neighbor. He and Elizabeth are thriving in their Leisure Village II retirement home and he steadily plays tennis (doubles) year-round, outdoors or in. He has chatted by phone occasionally with Bob Lee, who lives in nearby Sea Girt, and hopes to get a chance to see Bob and Geraldine sometime soon. While visiting with their grandchildren (and the latter's parents) in Connecticut a few months ago, he called Joe Choate in Southbury and got a report that Joe and Frances are doing well and Joe is very busy with a writing task (subject not defined).
I received a new class census, dated May 27, from the Alumni Records Office and will report some of the highlights of it. We have 472 members, made up of 348 living classmates and 124 widows. Some 231 classmates appeared to be retired, with the others mostly engaged in their own or a family business or in a professional practice (mostly medicine, of course).
The Florida population is climbing steadily from the last census and now numbers 46, including widows, or nearly ten percent of the class. Three classmates and two widows are now living overseas.
Of the total number, 57 classmates are listed as "not interested" or the records office has lost track of them. This is the same number as at the last report. Most of the individuals are nongraduates, but there is a somewhat surprising number of M.D.'s.
