At this writing it is the middle of August; the scene is somewhere outside of Denver. This scribe, on the way westward in search of eternal youth, has stopped at Braine Deevy's adobe hut for rest, companionship, and a typewriter. This column's confabulations must get to press.
Last month Cupid's presence was noted. This month the stork is in the limelight. Amy Cammann Cholnoky writes from Chicago that their first "little nipper," John Buchanan, six pounds and 15 ounces, arrived on the fourth of July. John Sr. has been transferred to a New York office, and thus this fall the clan will take up residence in Connecticut. Amy also noted that they see a lot of Jeannieand Mike Walsh, who are toting their own offspring, Moira, these days.
Reliable sources report that Fred andSue Kramer produced a future Big Greener this past July. Lauren Bray weighed in at eight pounds and five ounces and is expected to be starting at scrum half by next spring. Freddy and Sue are living and working in the Boston area.
Philadelphia is teeming with activity these days, and Robert Overhiser is right in the middle of it. When he is not assisting in the management of his family's millwork company, he is personally redoing the signwork at various train stations along the main line west of Philadelphia. He has some unique ideas. By the way, Bob and Sharyl have a great guest room on the third floor of their home in Merion Station.
Anthony Spatacco is also in Philly. Chic is currently working in the stocks and bonds business as well as participating in the city's nightlife. The "little general" mentioned that he had heard from KenRenner recently. Ken, part of the expanding career-change-at-the-age-of-30 group, is a medical student at Wisconsin.
A third citizen of the City of Brotherly Love is lan Frank. Lan has finished a two- year fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and is embarking on an additional year of research at the same institution.
On the postcard front, Ro Griggs and a friend wrote from the Black Forest that they were having a great time touring Europe. Ro has finished his residency at the McKay Dee Porter Family Practice Center in Salt Lake City and will soon take up practice in Ohio. Ro noted that he had visited John Mugglebee in southern France. Muggsy, who has his master's degree in creative writing, is teaching English and writing the great American novel.
I am going to close this column with saddening news. This past June Mark Lebowitz died of heart failure during surgery in New York City. Mark's obituary will appear in this or a subsequent issue of the magazine, but an additional few words are warranted. Mark touched the lives of many people in a special way. The strength of the bond which existed between Mark and those around him was exemplified by the presence of seven of his fellow Dartmouth Aires at his funeral. According to his sister Katie '76, it was a very special moment at the funeral when the Aires sang the version of Mark's favorite song, "Somewhere" from West SideStory, which he had arranged while at Dartmouth. Mark is greatly missed. The class extends its deepest regrets to his family.
