Before dipping into the mail bag for the month, let me try to give Class Agent BobRussell and his associates a boost by saying that as of April 28 the Class of 1948 had climbed up from last to fourth place in the Little Green Derby portion of the current Alumni Fund Drive. We're just a step ahead of '49! 21% of the class had contributed up to the date mentioned and '48 had attained 28% of its monetary objective. If the rest of us chip in and help, it looks as if we might be able to make a respectable showing for a change in relation to the other young classes. The thanks of the College is extended to those who have helped make possible its future through your giving. And those of you who have not yet helped, please remember that no amount is too .small. Give all you can of course, but at least give something. How about it?
In the matrimonial field of activity, Mr. and Mrs. John B. Souza of Osterville, Mass., have announced the engagement of their daughter Alice to Stan Alger. Alice is with the Cape and Vineyard Electric Company in Hyannis on Cape Cod, while Stan, an MIT graduate alumnus, is an architect with the firm of Walter M. Gaffney in the same town. A fall wedding is planned. Congratulations to you both!
Another couple meriting felicitations are the Dick Bredenbergs. They just had offspring number two, Richard Eric, to add to an expanding family already consisting of Ingrid Anne. Needless to say, we're mighty proud and happy." Dick is still plugging away at biblical studies at Drew University in Madison, N. J., and he acts as assistant pastor at the Presbyterian Church in the town.
I've been amazed at the number of '48s who are spring ski enthusiasts. On recent weekends, Tuckerman's Ravine on Mt. Washington, where there is still a good 80 (yes, eighty!) feet of snow as of May 5, has noted the presence of the following: Al Epstein, Gil Shattuck, AlBecker and Walt Cairns. There may have been others in addition to these, too, that yours truly didn't see. Looked almost like a '48 reunion preview. As of last report, Al Epstein had made the round trip from New York to Mt. Washington on four successive weekends quite a prodigious feat.
A great letter from engineer Bob Tracy in Buffalo provided a lot of news. He is employed as a general construction estimator by the International Chimney Corp. Even more important, he became engaged this spring, but Bob neglected to tell us more about his fiancee other than that her name is Winnie and that she's a real Dartmouth supporter. Congratulations, Bob, to you both! Trace reported that at the American Society of Civil Engineers Centennial last fall in Chicago he saw Don Ryan, and that he more recently talked with Paul Branch in Olean, N. Y. The atter was married the week after Carnival, and his wife Tony teaches school. Something was mentioned about spreading the Branches after this June. Bob also mentioned that Johnny Fenno stopped by on his way out to Terre Haute last fall and that Warren andDot Daniell went through on their vacation about that time. Bob runs into lumberman Dick Weaver quite often as they are in related lines of business. In addition to all this information, Trace put most of the rest of us to shame by making a very generous contribution to the Alumni Fund. Nice going, Bob.
Gordie Winkler recently joined the staff of Daniel J. Edelman & Associates, Chicago public relations agency, as an account executive. He was formerly a reporter for the ChicagoTribune as well as reporter and rewrite man for the City News Bureau. Cal Brown has been shifted from Springfield, V., to Chicago by the Bryant Chuck Grinder Co. of the former city. He can be reached at 5835 W. North Ave. Herb Shulman is now in the real estate business in the sunny Southwest —at 4310 Cooper Circle, Tucson, Ariz. DaveMeeker is District Sales Agent for the Hobart Mfg. Co. in Harrisburg, Pa., and he hangs his hat overnight in nearby Camp Hill. Look for him at 611 Devon Road. Ed Ouellette has apparently left the restaurant business, for he is now a Special Agent for the Peerless Casualty Cos. in Concord, N. H. He still makes his home, however, in Berlin. Jim Hickey is a Lieutenant in the Navy aboard USS Dicking, DD 685, c/o F.P.0., New York. How about more information, Jim? Johnny Wood, who has been leading an exciting life the past few years as a cloak-and-dagger man for the Narcotics Bureau of the Treasury Dept., recently became engaged. Sorry our news is inadequate as of the moment. Judging by her picture, however, the future Mrs. Wood is a lovely girt.
Guess that about winds up another session with the '48 mailbag. If any of you are to be in Hanover at any time over the next few months, how about phoning yours truly in Norwich to say hello? Would be glad to hear from you. See you in the fall.
