George Newman sends in an update from Sarasota, Fla., where he and his wife live from October 15 to May 1, when they move back to Mattapoisett, Mass., for the summer. George's stroke 12 years ago left him paralyzed on his left side, with no use of his left arm and hand. Until recently he was able to walk short distances with a cane, but he is now in a wheelchair. He attends the Dart- mouth Sarasota and Ivy Club luncheons quite regularly and has a discussion group of 14 or 15 men at his home, where topics of interest are discussed, with one of the group acting as leader, followed by sandwiches, cake, and coffee. The members are mostly Dartmouth grads and include the following '25ers: BillBunting, Ed Burns, Mott Garlock (until he was laid up), and Don Hunt. George extends an invitation to any classmate in the vicinity of Sarasota (between October 15 and May 1) to join the group, which meets at 10:00 a.m. on the second Thursday of the month at his home, 3660 Torrey Pines Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 33583 (tel. 924-3353). (Bring your own sandwich.)
Whitey White is proposing a trip by buses to Moosilauke Ravine Lodge for our farewell luncheon at reunion. Those of you who have been there know what a beautiful spot it is; for those who haven't, it will give the reunion something of an Outing Club experience.
Some of you may remember Herb Rice, who was with us only in our freshman year. He had his own insurance agency from 1928 until he retired in 1968. He served in the navy as lieutenant, senior grade, during the war, from 1942 to 1946, was involved in a nationwide radar program, was a three-handicap golfer in his fifties, and was club champion at Shinnecock Hills, in Southampton, Long Island, in 1955. He has been working in industrial land development in Sarasota for the past 20 years and has made at least ten trips to Europe with his wife. He is a member of clubs at Shinnecock Hills, Seminole, and Everglades in Palm Beach, and resides in Southampton, Long Island, and Palm Beach, Fla. a pretty good record for a guy who missed out on the good old "D" education the rest of us had.
A thought for reunion how about writing each member of your fraternity delegation, urging them to plan to be in Hanover in June.
Phil O'Connell writes, sending good news and bad news. The latter is that his wife is suffering from inoperable cancer and that they lost a daughter recently to hepatitis. The cheery news tells of 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The highlight is a 26year-old grandson, a baritone who studied at juilliard, playing the minor lead with Gene Barry in La Cage aux Folks in Los Angeles. Phil's activity is mainly golf; he has won four senior tournaments (in his age group) this year. His handicap is up to 15 now. The big news is that he made his first hole in one in 72 years on the links. According to Golf Digest records, this is the longest time any golfer has played before getting a hole in one. Phil remarks: "What patience." They will miss their usual trip to Clearwater this winter due to Eileen's condition, but he hopes to see us all in Hanover in June.
The Alumni Fund goal is higher this year; a modest increase in your gift or pledge will help, and, incidentally, sending it in early saves postage and the time of your class agent.
We learned with sorrow of the death of Kay McKennan, widow of our late Bob McKennan. Graveside services.were conducted by Fred Berthold, holder of the Preston Kelsey Chair of Religion. Our class was represented by Rad Tanzer, Larry Leavitt, and Gertie Whelden.
Thought for the month: as Stephen Wright says, "You can't have everything. Where would you put it?"
