An article in the September 23 edition of The Wall Street Journal covers the trials and tribulations of Jim Hutchison as he battles to bring his New Orleans radio stations back to the number one slot. Jim's problems are not just with ratings but also with advertising dollars. Many businesses are reluctant to advertise on black stations and those that do want cut rates. As a result, Jim estimates a loss of $500,000 to $1 million compared to white stations with similar ratings. Jim is not one to take this lying down and has pushed vigorously to eliminate this discriminatory attitude on the part of businesses and ad agencies. Although he has met with some success, it has cost him financially to do so and has not made him the most popular guy in the advertising world.
Jim is president and chief broadcast official for Chicago-based Inter Urban Group, which bought WYLD-FM and WYLD-AM in 1981. Jim is also chairman of the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters.
Giff Foley writes, "Anne Kneisel gave husband Bill a remarkable 40th birthday party in Manchester, Mass. Ken Wilson and Dick Sammis '73 regaled all with long forgotten stories of Florida road trips and other educational delights. Partner Garson Fields '73 and I entered the Reno air races in September. Our plane, 'Miss Behavin" (a stripped-down WWII AT-6), won the silver competition encouraging us to return next year with more entries in this fine outdoor sport."
Lastly, I want to remind you again of our 20th Reunion June 17-19, 1988. If you haven't received details of this gala event, give me a call and I'll send them out. Make the effort to be there. Take care and write.
