Whoop-de-do! I'm in the mood. After 40 days of continuous snow, clouds, and subfreezing cold, this one dawned and remains bright and sunny shades of a crisp winter day in Hanover, with bright clean snow on the ground and resting on the tree limbs. Missing from our spot on the globe are the hills, the evergreen trees, and century-old colonial homes, yet there's enough atmosphere to jog one's memory.

Word has reached your scribe via Hanover of the deaths of two classmates. John Harley, a member of the class through 1938, who continued his studies at the Sorbonne and was a 1941 graduate of the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., suffered a stroke and died in San Francisco last November 28. To his wife, Antoinette, and their four children, our sympathies are extended. Subsequently, notification of the death of Roscoe Giles Jr. of Chicago on December 7 was received. Our sincere expression of sympathy is directed to his wife, Virginia, and their sons, Roscoe 111 and Morris. Obituaries will appear in this or a subsequent issue of the Magazine.

As I write, Bob MacMillen, hobbled by a damaged knee, is gathering a few belongings together prior to admission to Hanover's Mary Hitchcock Hospital. He was feted at a get-well-quick party just before admission. He is bound and determined to confuse the heck out of the staff when they find the blood test results: Type, Seagram's V.0.! Bob will receive a new knee implant, expects to be hospitalized for about a week, then recuperate for another four or five with the aid of crutches. Anyone for a small wager that Bob will enter, participate in, and finish the twokilometer event at reunion?

In the thumbnail biography in "Time Well Spent" issued for our 25th, Gardiner Ashley's most interesting pastime was given as amateur theatricals. It would appear that little has changed in the past 20 years. First, he remains associated with Franklin College in Franklin, Ind. Further, he continues his acting pursuit, having recently had "a part in a biographical musical depicting the history of Franklin College from its founding to the present. As one of the founders (from the East) I hammed it with a heavy Maine accent." He will be at 1940's 45th, June 10.

Excuses, excuses! Rudy Horky explains that a trip to Europe took the place of Alumni College in '84, but he hopes to attend in 1985. Sure hope your commitment for '85 includes reunion, too, Rudy.

Nick Turkevich sends regards from Paris and more. "Still here in Paris now in my seventh year in the City of Light. Should any classmates surface here, my phones are: business, 720-78-00; and home, 500-18-42 (unlisted); address at home is 5 Avenue Alphand, Paris 75016, France. Saw Joe Burnett, HowieZagor, and Bobs Graham and MacMillen during a brief visit to Hanover in August."

It was on Tuesday, December 11, that the National Conference of Christians and Jews convened a Textile Luncheon in the grand ballroom of New York's Pierre Hotel, at which hundreds of his peers in the industry and friends honored Vene Gutman, recognizing his continuing support and commitment toward "Educating for Brotherhood." The purpose of the NCCJ in setting up programs in human relations skills and techniques is to educate in the belief that wellinformed citizens, who have become sensitive to the needs and rights of their fellow citizens, constitute the foundation upon which our democratic society thrives. Programs are conducted for clergy, educators, police, parents, students, and community organizations throughout the year.

In addition to his work in behalf of NCCJ, Vene is the current president of Pressman- Gutman Company, former vice president of the Textile Distributors Association, and cur- rent board member of the same. He is also serving on the board of the following orga- nizations: Heart Fund Council of New York, Drexel-Burnham Mutual Fund, Cheltenham Arts Center, and Hood Museum (of Dart- mouth). He is the current chairman of the Philadelphia Museum of Judaica and a trustee of Congregation Rodeph Shalom and of the Albert Einstein Medical Center. And there's more. A big Wah-Hoo-Wah, Al, for all of your efforts in behalf of humanity. Surely we'll see the staunch and hard-to-beat team of Mary Bert and Al, defending their tennis trophies earned at the 40th, at our forthcoming 45th.

Notes for May: Start packing for 1940's 45th. Get out the 1940 Aegis in preparation for June 10, 11, 12, and 13. Send in your gift to the Alumni Fund.
