Reunion Notes: 1986 (Continued): You read it here first: Sam Bell is running for governor of Florida. Sam admitted he was going to run in a conversation during the reunion cocktail party at the new Hood Museum. Now, that's not right away. He already has been chosen as speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, a job he will assume in the fall of 1990, and hold for two years. But after that, he's running for governor. Those of you who live in Florida are hereby summoned as 1961 classmates to aid his campaign when it is formally established.

I passed out index cards and asked for news at our Saturday night banquet at Thompson Arena. Unfortunately, not all the waiters got the message, so I may have missed some of your communications. Here are the ones I got:

"Thaddeus Seymour for President!" Seriously, that's all the unsigned card said. It was written in green ink. Thad was, of course, our Saturday night speaker.

Anthony H. Horan: "I am working on the development of the North American Urological Institution, devoted to the improved care of prostatic cancer."

Chip Serrell: "After teaching for 17 years, I am now working for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York. Currently, I am working in the Domestic Private Banking Division, offering a full range of services nationwide. In October, I married Wendy Bartlett of St. Joseph, Mo. My older daughter, Lisa, will be a senior at Greenwich High School and Allison, age 12, is a seventh-grader at Greenwich Country Day."

"Dennis for editor!"

Another cryptic card, this one nominating Dennis Dinan for another term as editor of The Dartmouth Alumni Magazine. Though the card was unsigned, it obviously was from someone who knows that the editorial board, of which I am a member, will soon nominate the next editor.

Harris McKee: "Pleasures: Moosilauke climbing and girl watching. Accomplishments: Very successful wife selector and builder of chips."

"Aren't you glad I'm not from MIT?" Can't interpret the unsigned card from this nerd.

Bill Sheehan: "Thoroughly enjoyed our 25th. Came with life partner Ann (married in 1961 in the White Church) and daughter Natalie. Other daughters, Sandi and Erika, are busy and safe in the wide, wide world. Busy practicing pulmonary medicine at Truesdale Clinic in Fall River, Mass., very rewarding in terms of life goals. Living in Dartmouth, Mass., where the high school symbol is the Indian, the colors are green and white, and the songs are all the same."

"Someone at 'Passages' (session 3)— help me out if you know—reported a woman conducting a bird-watching expedition said: '90 percent of the questions haven't been asked yet.' Why not ask our class to provide an unasked question that they would be willing to work toward answering?"

End of card. Anybody with any answers? I'll put responses here.

As you might have anticipated, there were a few cards with stories about classmates that are unprintable in a magazine that often ends up on the coffee table.

As promised last month, here is a report on our class meeting:

Election of officers: Vic Rich, president; Mike Murphy, vice president; Bob Conn, secretary (term 3); Bob Rosier, treasurer; Bert Rowley, Bob "Otter" Anderson, newsletter editors (term 3 for both); RonWybranowski, Alumni Council representative; Dave Prewitt, mini-reunion chair; Art Kelton, bequest chair; and Bob Vincent, 1961 Fellows chair. The slate was approved unanimously.

The executive committee, consisting of the above officers and a whole bunch of other volunteers, will meet at least once annually, probably in New York.

Ron Boss, who headed our successful reunion fund-raising effort, will become head of the entire Alumni Fund, joining our own able Henry Eberhardt. (For those of you who didn't hear: a late report from retiring head agent Art Kelton: we made our goal of $1,001,961; set two Dartmouth records, for matching gifts of $120,119, and for participation, with 87 percent or 529 classmates giving. JUST MATCHTHAT, 1962! Bet yon fall short on percentagegiving! And says Art: "On top of all of this, we demolished Princeton '61 as they ended up with only 63 percent.")

So congratulations and thank you to Ron and Art and to all of the fund-raising committee, especially Frank Stephens, ArtJohnson, A1 Orschel, Oscar Arslanian,Rick Foster, Ralph Barton and all the class agents and all of you who participated. While we're on thank yous, thanks to Dave Prewitt for pitching in as president partway through Hop Holmberg's term after Hop headed out for Kenya. (Hop was back for reunion with wife and children; see part III of the reunion report in the November issue.)

Thanks also to Ron Wybranowski and all his coworkers for such a successful reunion, to Charlie Buffon, for all his work these past few years coordinating our successful 1961 fellows program, and to all the participants.

Reunion report part III next month, the November issue.

This is being written in mid-August, but bythe time you see the column, we should already have had our mini-reunion, which wasscheduled for Dartmouth Night Weekend, October 17-19, 1986. Given the deadlines of thismagazine, I hope to have a report on thatweekend in the December issue.
