THE BE QUESTS & TRUSTS PROGRAM

THE CHAIRMAN'S REPORT

It was a memorable year in the 36-year history of the Dartmouth Bequests & Trusts Program, which received for Dartmouth a record total of $13,100,085. These gifts and bequests were mostly designated for the College's permanent endowment, for scholarships, the Library, the Alumni Fund, the professional schools, faculty salaries, the athletic program, and other important programs.

Two other records were established, testifying to the increasingly important role the Bequests Program is playing in Dartmouth fund-raising. Total receipts for realized bequests reached a new high of $8,996,394, and the number of donors who added to existing life income trusts was a record 62. This latter figure was especially gratifying, since "repeat donors" reflect a confidence in the investment practices of the College as trustee of these plans. A life income giving highlight was the large number of new charitable gift annuities created-30 annuities for a total of $753,538, prompted undoubtedly by favorable changes in annuity rates and tax tables.

The largest bequest of the year came from the estate of Edward Tuck, Class of 1862. A distribution of $2,649,306 was received from a trust he established in 1929, to be added to an unrestricted income endowment fund in his name.

Since its adoption, the Bequest Program has encouraged alumni and their wives and widows in the post-25th reunion classes to include the College in their estate planning through bequests, life income trusts and annuities, life insurance, and other gifts. The Program represents one Dartmouth generation helping future generations through planned giving. And it is working.

On behalf of the Bequest Committee of the Alumni Council and the Association of Class Bequest Chairmen, I extend heartfelt thanks to all members of the Dartmouth Family who are responding to this most important appeal. The College will forever be strengthened by your support.
