"Welcome Class of 1990" reads the September greeting from the facade of Hopkins Center. This freshmen class derives from 8,750 applicants, second largest number in College history. The class consists of approximately 1,030 matriculants: 640 boys, 390 girls, with about 52 blacks, 72 Asian-Americans, and 175 legacy sons and daughters.
In comparison, when the famous wartorn class of 1922 entered Dartmouth, September 19, 1918, there were 393 of us, and 45 left at or before the end of the first trimester, December 12, 1918. Our class later grew to 500 men. But according to The Dartmouth of September 25, 1918, the total enrollment of the College was then 823 men. And we all carried books and guns.
And now, 1922 with 55 living grads, 47 non-grads, two adoptions, and 116 widows hopes 1990 will look forward to its 65th reunion in the year of 2055 as we Twoters do to June 12-14, 1987, in the Hanover beloved by all Dartmouth classes, regardless of age.
The class of 1922, once again, offers its hearty gratitude to classmates and to our 1922 ladies and other relatives who contributed to the 1986 Alumni Fund. With traditional loyalty, 52 living classmates and 40 memorial donors contributed $39,642.
Warren Daniell, now our head agent, is keeping 1922's successful team of class agents and is adding three loyal '22 ladies Jeanne Daniell, Pat Greenwood, and Louise Olsen who are cordially welcomed aboard. Therefore, our current Alumni Fund team consists of Ray Atwood, Gray Bates, Jack Dana, Jeanne and Warren Daniell, Jack Dodd, CarrollDwight, Pat Greenwood, Killy Kilmarx,Rex Malmquist, Ike Miller, Louise Olsen, and Herm Oliver. They will continue to carry on for Dartmouth.
The many friends of our late Carter andAlie Hoyt will be pleased to know that their first granddaughter, Susan H. Langbein, received her A.8., magna cum laude, from Bowdoin last spring. A math major, dean's list student, and James Bowdoin scholar, Sue spent her junior year at St. Andrews University, Scotland. At Bowdoin, she was a member of the college chorale, the dramatic society, and the girls' varsity cross country team. Susan's parents are Nancy (Hoyt) Langbein and her husband, Ed Langbein, a Bowdoin alumnus. Congratulations, Sue, and Mom and Dad.
Shaw Livermore, our class salutatorian, died August 8 in Tucson. An obituary will follow. And, in answer to your question, Alden James is our valedictorian. There were five summa cum laude graduates in the class: Gaylord and Troyer Anderson,John Fancher, Alden James, and ShawLivermore.
At Thanksgiving, be thankful for Dartmouth
