Dick Sutherland was kind enough to send me a fine account of this fall's Annapolis football weekend, which was co-produced by Dick and class social chairman Ted Spetnagle. Members of '57 in attendance included: Randy and VirginiaAires and daughter Katherine; Bill andJodi Flood and son Ryan; Jay Greene and his new wife, Pauline; George and AnnJohnston; Stan and Meredith Knipe; Boband June Macdonald; Ray and Mary AnnMarks; Hanny Mason; Dave and RuthOrr; Tom and Shirley Schwarz; Larry andRicky Silberman; Ted and Judy Spetnagle; Dick and Carolyn Sunderland and son Rick '82 with wife Cheryl '83; DaveVorse and his new wife, Marie; Dick andCharlotte Welsh; and Chuck and NancyWinslow. The weekend began with our '57s joining 650 Dartmouth alumni and family for the Friday evening reception and dinner at the Hyatt in Baltimore. Coach Yukica and Dave McLaughlin spoke and Dave Vorse was honored as a "Wearer of the Green" (skiing). Following the dinner, many of the '57s brought the party across the street to a seafood restaurant overlooking the harbor. Saturday morning they boarded boats for a sail to Annapolis. Once there they retired to a Dartmouth tent for beer and box lunches, hoping to keep out of the occasional rain. By now you know that the Dartmouth football team was not able to beat the 35-point spread, but there were a few moments to cheer about. Following the game, Ted Spetnagle organized an all evening long party at the Hyatt bar back in Baltimore. Ted was able to exact a vow from the brethren that all would attend our 30th reunion in Hanover this June. You will be hearing a lot about this event, which sounds great.
Chuck Winslow is now back in Columbus, where he was before going to Tokyo five years ago, and has a son, Jonathan, on the Dartmouth football team.
Dick Welsh claims the longest class business commute: he lives in Dallas and regularly works out of Arthur Young's New York office.
Non-Annapolis news is the following: When we last left Dave Clements, he was sweating profusely in a northern California dock, accused of negligence for not discovering an embezzlement during his accounting firm's audit of a client. You will be pleased to know that the eloquence of his trial lawyer, Dave Sandborg, resulted in his being exonerated on all counts. Was the jury swayed by the fact that Dave C. is a swell dresser and the sole support of three Burmese cats and a foxy lady named Linda? I dunno.
I think most of us were wildy enthusiastic five years ago when Dave McLaughlin was nominated to the Wheelock succession. Unfortunately, his five-year tour was rocked by a number of contentious events. I live on the edge of the Stanford campus and across the bay from Cal Berkeley, and what happened in Hanover happened locally as well. What was different was how the Dartmouth community reacted to events like Mandela Hall. In any case, Dave has had many accomplishments, particularly in building the College endowment, improving facilities, and increasing faculty compensation. Our degrees have continuted to appreciate during this watch, and I am sure all '57s wish Dave and Judy the best and know that they will continue to be very active in Dartmouth affairs. Nominations for successor? How about Dartmouth grads Jonathan Moore (currently ambassador at large for refugees) or Mike Heyman (chancellor at Cal Berkeley)? And throw in Miami's Dave Shula to succeed Coach Yukica!
