News was a little scarce this month, so while you've got your Christmas cards and stamps out and you're in a festive mood, why not drop a note to the above address and let me know how you're doing.
Kul Gautam returned to Hanover in August for his first visit since graduation. Kul is currently chief of the Latin American and Caribbean Programs at the United Nations in New York, and was showing his wife and two children around the campus when he encountered Bob Graham '40 at the information booth on the Green. Bob reports that Kul was quite interested in Dartmouth's Project Dante. Kul's father-in-law translated TheDivine Comedy into Nepalese, and Kul was sure he would be interested in the Dante Project's extensive computer files.
Class president Peter Broberg reports hearing from Dick and Dottie Krant. Dick works for Tenneco in Brussels and wants to know if there are other Dartmouth types in Belgium. A quick look at our class directory suggests that Bill Weston in West Germany, Mahmoud Daw in Vienna, and Stephen Swinscoe in France are the nearest '72s. Because European assignments are frequently short-lived, I would be happy to pass along an updated list of classmates on the continent if someone will send me new information. Peter also reports that the class will begin to use regional Alumni Fund coordinators to assist head agent David Bailey in the future. Dave did a tremendous job of pulling things together for our reunion year giving campaign, and the additional help should allow him to resume a personal life. Anyone, especially West Coast residents, interested in helping out as a regional coordinator or in some other capacity should contact Pete, Dave, or me.
I recently returned from a business trip to Anchorage, Alaska, where I contacted two classmates. Doug Knutson is an engineer with ARCO, responsible for the automation of oil production at Kuparuk Field on the North Slope of Alaska. BobBassett currently teaches government in high school and directs an outdoor program similar to Outward Bound. In his ten years in Alaska, Bob has had extensive experience in the "bush", working with Eskimo children and has even picked up the sport of saltwater kayaking.
Charles Nearburg finished his first year of racing in the Atlantic Cup series in October. A blown engine with ten laps remaining in the final race cost him rookie- of-the-year honors, but he was happy to sandwich a full season of racing around business commitments. Charly has also been doing some rowing to stay in shape here in Dallas, and the fours crew he rows with did quite well in an Austin regatta this fall. In between car races and crew races, Charly stays busy with oil and gas exploration, primarily in New Mexico.
Shel Prentice saw David Rath officiating at a rugby match in Norwich recently. David has a law practice in Hinesburg, Vt., as does Joe Fallon. Shel seems to think it significant that two-thirds of the legal capacity of Hinesburg is provided by our class. I wonder whether the significance is in David and Joe independently picking the same small town to practice in or just the seemingly endless number of lawyers our class has produced.
To everyone in the Dartmouth family, my sincerest holiday wishes for health, happiness, and peace on earth.
