Wow!
What with Christmas greetings, a few letters, and a bunch of green postcards, I have more to work with than I can do full justice to. If any of you feel I have overedited your friendly communications, please keep in mind that I'm allowed only 800 words.
Among the Christmas greetings - some unexpected but all appreciated - the most fascinating came from Ted Harbaugh, with such a wealth of interesting information on his activities that I've passed it on to the "Tear Bag" dynamic duo. Eleanor Smith includes a note on Dave's hobby of crafting miniatures of colonial furniture, which sounds interesting enough to justify an illustrated article in the Magazine.
Len Shortell combines holiday greetings with comments on spring and fall junkets through the U.S. and Canada: "What a country we live in!" RalphSpecht reports a visit from brother Frank and wife, as well as a meeting of the Sarasota Dartmouth Club attended with classmates Richter, Moulton, Webster,Ferries, and Fellows. Jean LeSure speaks with feeling of her experience of the "care, love, and joy" from husbands and wives of The Great Class; Len Bryant tells of "trying to get up the courage" for a projected visit to his daughter and diplomat son-in-law in Pakistan; and GordieHamlin waxes enthusiastic about a fall trip to Great Britain and Ireland and an upcoming visit to Spain and Portugal. Jack Au Werter corroborates my previously announced disclaimer of the false allegations as to his involvement in a Shaker Heights pyramid scam (turns out Jack now lives in Cleveland Heights); and Bob Boehm reports three weeks in Europe that took in, among other places, Belgium s medieval town of Brugge, "a treasure trove of beautiful things."
Of special interest to those of us who occasionally indulge ourselves in TV fare is word from Harry Ackerman that he has just finished a TV movie, Gidget's SummerReunion, that may lead to a weekly series. Meanwhile, wife Elinor decorates "Days of Our Lives" as wicked Nurse Honeycutt.
In the heartwarming parade of green cards, the most remarkable report comes from Hunt Harrison, who advises that granddaughters Nancy, 25, and Julie, 24, finished fourth and 18th in the Hawaiian Iron Man Triathlon"! If you don't know what that represents, look it up and be suitably impressed.
Allen Tacy has immersed himself in the burgeoning cellular telephone industry and says that in the year 2000 we will be carrying pocket telephones that can call anywhere. Personally, I'm willing to wait.
Travel reports come from Lou Hawkins, who enjoyed a 2,000-mile cruise down the Mississippi; Al Sherwood and Jean, who opted for Europe instead of Hanover and the fall mini (they expect to see Cramp Carrick and Ginny during a two-month winter retreat to Naples, Fla.; Betty Luneborg, who was "gathering herself together" for a trip to the Orient; and Earl Arthurs, planning a January departure for a three-month cruise on the Rotterdam. Earl also speaks of pleasant visits with the Bankarts in Connecticut and the Dave Smiths in California.
Other classmate encounters include an exchange-of-visits reported by JackThomas with Ev Dann and Charlotte at the unlikely geographic extremes of Vermont and Arizona; conversations between Jack Davis in Nevada and Howie Hinman in Oregon (Jack says living in Nevada constitutes exile so far as Dartmouth contacts are concerned); Rudy Pacht's attendance at a California Dartmouth Night celebration, with Harry Ackerman and Elinor, as well as a January dinner date with Dud Russell and Bet, on, of all places, the Queen Mary (The Great Class goes first class); and Lou Bookheim's expectation of seeing Put Kingsbury and Hugh Rafferty in La Jolla when winter drives them west. Lou also advises of his disquiet based on news that Art Wertheim is housebound with a chronic lung problem.
Moves are reported by Ted Huck (four and a half miles from his 1.5 acres to a condo "with a 250-square-foot patio"); John Howe, who has acquired a winter home in Gainesville, Fla., to balance his summer quarters in Orange, Mass.; and Phil Hemphill, in the process of selling his Carolina home, prior to alternating between Connecticut and Florida.
And that's about it-love and peace to you all.
